Contributed A W mm Teacher earns gifted award Special to the Journal Warner Robins High School teacher Scott Daniel was named the Gervaise Wynn Perdue Gifted Teacher of the Year Dec. 4 at the Houston County Association for Gifted Children meeting. Gervaise Perdue, who began the Houston County Gifted Program in the 19705, per sonally presented Daniel’s award. Daniel was presented with gifts and cash awards val ued at about $865, including SIOO from the HE A Federal Credit Union and $555 from the HCAGC. He also received several gifts: dinner and movie from Dr. and Mrs. Gary State honors HMS’s Taylor with music education award Special to the Journal Huntington Middle School Principal Dr. Gwendolyn Taylor will be recognized by the Georgia Music Educators Association for her support of music education. She will be presented with the GMEA Administrative Leadership Award Jan. 26, 2007, at the annual GMEA conference, which will be held in Savannah. The award will be presented during the General Session before a large assembly of music educators. “I am very honored to receive this award,” Taylor said. “I am a firm believer that music education plays an important part in a child’s life and that education in the fine arts brings out their creativity and stimulates their learning.” GMEA’s Recognition and Awards Program, according to a release, honors excel lence in achievement by members and individuals served by the organization. The Administrative Leadership Award is given to an active Georgia admin istrator in recognition of significant leadership at the system or school level in sup port of music education. An administrator’s ongo ing encouragement and sup port for music education for all students are considered. Nominations are submitted by members of GMEA. Taylor was nominated by Huntington Middle School Band Director James Christiansen, HMS Choral < -tv* ; Vp ' ’ Pool, a lamp and note cards from Books are Fun, din ner for two from Piccadilly, a pecan assortment from Priester’s, a sushi tray from the Mitered Corner, a can dle from Impressions and cologne from Belk Matthews. As the system’s Gifted TOTY, Daniel will be nominated for the state-level award. Other nominees for this presti gious award were: Jane Wilson (Northside High School), Sandy Gamboa (Russell Elementary), Terry Lenderman (Bonaire Elementary) and Shannon Bryant (Quail Run Elementary). Past winners include Jan Kirchoff (2005), Janine Davis (2004) and Peggy McCall (2003). Perdue is the wife of former Superintendent of Schools David A. Perdue (1960 - 1980) and Gov. Sonny Perdue’s aunt. Before presenting the award, she shared anecdotes about the early history of the gifted program. Although Perdue was not one of the judges for the award, she read each appli cation in preparation for the evening and commented that she was, in fact, a little intimidated by the accom plishments and abilities of the talented teachers work ing with the top 10 per cent of Houston County’s students. ground; honors, recogni tions and awards; profes sional memberships; a brief statement of the nominee’s philosophy toward music education; and evidence of support and encouragement of music education in cur rent position.
