ENI Gary Harmon The Eagles’ Nick Bass scores in Northside’s state championship win Friday in McConnell-Talbert Stadium. ByDONMONCRIEF Journal Sports Editor The wait is over. Northside has its football championship. It took the school 336 wins and 43 years to get it, but when they did, they made it big. The Eagles dominated the War Eagles of Marist 30-6 to capture the Georgia High School Association’s AAAA state title Friday in McConnell- Talbert Stadium. “I owe it all to these guys,” said Northside head football coach Conrad Nix. “God has really blessed us. These guys played hard, they practice hard. “This is just great for the Northside community,” he added. “The Northside community has had to take a lot of heat but this is a great place. This is a great school. “These guys won it but they won it for all the guys in the past.” One of those “guys in the past” was Jason Respert who in his senior year witnessed firsthand an improb able Lowndes rally that knocked the Eagles out in the Georgia Dome in ‘99. Warner Robins snaps Perry's win streak; Demonettes hold off Lady Panthers By MATTHEW BROWN Journal Sports Writer Kenny Willis’ 3-pointer with three seconds remain- ing ended a thrilling boys basket ball contest Thursday at Warner Robins High. Willis and the Demons prevailed over the Perry High Panthers 61- 58. It was the first loss of the season Warner Robins boys 61, Perry 58 for Perry in its fifth game so far this season. For Warner Robins, it was the first game coach Chip Malone had his full varsity squad in uniform. Without the Demon football players, Warner Robins split two games with Peach County and lost to the Panthers See SNAPS, page SB Sports Now, one of the Eagles’ coach es, one of Respert’s students was Tijuan Green. Green was a phenom enal force, rushing for well over 200 yards. He had plenty of blocking but even on the few times he didn’t, the War Eagles played havoc bringing him down. “He’s a credit to himself,” Nix said. “He’s worked hard. He’s done a good job.” Marist took the opening posses sion of the game on its own 24. It ran it five yards on first down but gained nothing on the following handoff. Deonta Jordan made the stop on third down to force a punt. Northside, following that, took over on its 28. Green took the first handoff from scrimmage and burst through an enormous hole for 10 yards and a first down. Marques Ivory ran wide left on the Eagles’ next play. He picked up 10- plus more yards putting the Eagles on the Marist side of the field. They then switched to the pass. Ivory hit Kevyn Cooper on a short route to his right. Cooper fought his way to the 28 and another first 7»-V>. iMBBT ■> -; W.SiStiimßmi JHHBH VH • • • • , .'3hßßWßp?y ENI/Gary Harmon Perry’s Kim Burgess shoots from the field as Warner Robins’ Kittery Maine attempts a block during the two teams’ matchup Thursday at Warner Robins. down. On a couple of runs and a com pleted pass that came up short on a third-and-nine, Northside stalled there. It then called on Devon Pike. He booted a 37-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Marist, following the kickoff, took over on its own 25. The War Eagles’ first run from scrimmage yielded only two yards but on the second, the runner found daylight around left end and sprinted all the way to Northside’s 42. The Eagles stiffened but a delay on third-and-nine enabled Marist to get it to the 30 and pick up another first down. Once again the Eagles bowed their backs. This time on third-and-nine Northside’s Eric Fields came around and pulled down Marist quarterback Gary Marshall from behind for a two-yard loss. It then turned to Colin Gallagher. He kicked a 43 yarder to tie it at 3-all. The Eagles, following the kickoff, took over on their 20. Green fought SECTION B his way to a first down on a third and-three before trouble struck. On the next play from scrimmage, Ivory’s pitch was mishandled, actu ally not handled at all. The War Eagles recovered on Northside’s 23. Marist’s first run picked up five yards and signaled the end of the first quarter. Jordan stopped the runner at the line on the next play and then on the one following he slowed the runner two yards behind the line. That enabled Eric Fields to stop him well short of a first down. Gallagher, however, was spot on again from 43 yards again to make it 6-3. The Eagles began the next drive on their own 20. From there it took them nine plays to score. Ivory started it off with a run of four yards and finished it off with a 35-yard pass to a wide-open Nick Bass on the right side of the field. Ivory was five of-five for 71 yards at that point. In between on the drive, there were highlights including: Green’s run of 18 and a run - by Green again - of eight yards on a fourth-and-one See CHAMPS, page yB By MATTHEW BROWN Journal Sports Writer What started out looking like a laugher turned into Demonettes 70, Lady Panthers 66 that led Warner Robins to a 70-66 win at home Thursday against Perry High.
