Students compete in national meats evaluation and technology event Special to the Journal Members of the Perry FFA Chapter were one of 40 teams participating in the 2006 National FFA Meats Evaluation and Technology Career Development Event. The competition was held Oct. 25-28, during the 79th National FFA Convention. The team placed ninth in the nation and Matt McKinney tied for 10th place in indi vidual competition. She is a fifth grade teacher at Tucker and sponsors the cup stacking club for fifth grade students. She received donated gifts from businesses such as: an inspira tional book from The Perry Bookstore, Gift Certificate from Life Tree Natural Foods, a massage from Panache, an apple pie from Kroger, and a style and haircut along with a shampoo set from Seasons Hair Salon and Spa. Pictured with Long is Davita Simpson, owner of Seasons Salon and Spa. The Houston County Career and Technology Center Student of the Month for November was Sam Smith. Smith was honored by the Evening Optimist Club of Warner Robins with an award and is shown in the attached photo with Ellen Strait with the Evening Optimist Club. The club pres ents this monthly award to a deserving student. The competition was held Oct. 25-28, during the 79th National FFA Convention The Perry FFA partici pants were asked to iden tify plant specimens accord ing to their scientific names and take a multiple-choice exam. The FFA members also performed hands-on activi ties ranging from design ing floral arrangements and synthesizing a real florist shop to interpersonal rela tions with a job interview and a selling practicum.
