Bear in mind, these are the classic toys and do not include the popular video game consoles of today which do not develop all of the above mentioned quali ties and may in fact prove to be harmful. I wouldn’t be surprised; however, that one day Atari, Nintendo and all those other game systems show up in the toy museum. They sure have evolved since the old days of “pong”! The National Toy Hall of Fame uses the following cri teria to determine if a toy is eligible for inclusion in the collection: ■ 1. Discovery: the toy fos ters learning, creativity, or discovery through play. ■ 4. Innovation: the toy profoundly changed play or toy design. A toy can be selected on the basis of just this category alone without meeting the first 3 criteria. The public can nominate a toy to the Strong Museum via the internet or mail and then an advisory commit tee made up of curators, educators and historians will review the submissions and make a recommenda tion to a National Selection Committee. This committee will vote on the item and if it gets a high number of votes, will become a “hall of fame” toy and be included for dis play at the museum. See if this list of “hall of famers” brings back any wonderful Christmas morn ing memories, (all of these toys are registered trade marks): alphabet blocks, Barbie, Bicycle, Candy Land Game, My favorite, the card “Inspector Pitt” series of Victorian mysteries and casts them as amateur sleuths.
