HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL Scholarship offered for community college students, recent alumni Special to the Journal The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has opened the nominations process for the largest scholarship available to students and recent alum ni from community colleges. Through the initiative, called the Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship Program, the private foun dation will award up to $30,000 annually per recip ient to help students and recent alumni from the com munity and two-year insti tutions pursue four-year degrees at any accredited Ga. Centennial Farm applications due in March Special to the Journal The Georgia Centennial Farm Program was created to draw attention to historic farms and to encourage their preservation. Nominees for the program are currently being taken and must meet the follow ing: Be at least 100 years old with a minimum of 10 acres actively involved in agricul tural production or generate at least SI,OOO in annual income. In addition, farms must have been owned by members of the same fam GDOT announces launch of website Special to the Journal The Georgia Department of Transportation recently announced the launch of www.whatsthebigidea.us, which according to a release, is a website that details the state’s $7.7 billion transpor tation funding shortfall over the next six years, but “offers hope that a funding solution can and will be found.” The website is the brain child of State Transportation Board Chairman Mike Evans. “Legislators and the pub lic can go online and see for themselves the cold hard facts about transporta tion funding in this state,” says Evans. “The reality is something has to be done.” Oxendine offers assistance Special to the Journal Georgia residents with insurance problems or ques tions can receive assistance directly from Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine’s office by contact ing his insurance investiga tor working in this area. This service, according to the release, is designed to provide you with informa tion you should know before purchasing insurance and how to avoid common mis takes. Last year, the foundation received nearly 700 nomina tions for these awards. Middle Georgia College professor Dr. Peter B. Makaya was selected to serve as MGC’s faculty rep resentative to the founda tion, and all nominations of the college’s students and alumni must be submitted to him. Makaya praised the scholarship stating, “This is indeed a lot of money that, can help students who have demonstrated excellence in academics and extracurric ily for at least 100 years or be listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Qualifying Centennial Farms are honored each October at a special award ceremony at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry. Since starting in 1993, the program has recog nized 327 farms around the state. The Centennial Farm Program is administered by: the Historic Preservation Division; Georgia Farm Bureau Federation; The website, according to the release, allows users to view transportation projects by county and see the status of projects that are either unfunded and have been moved out beyond the year 2014. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarships can provide funding for tuition, room and board, required fees and books for the length of the undergraduate degree which is generally two years. The foundation plans to award approximately 50 scholarships through this program in spring 2007. It will renew awards each year based upon student perfor mance.
