It runs up medical costs.” Malone said the practice, which is the exclusive team physicians for 10 area high schools and Fort Valley State University, treats stu dent athletes, about a third of which are on Medicaid. “We do all the physicals in Houston County and in other counties,” Malone said, “Over 3,000 physicals a year and the doctors don’t receive a penny. The $lO fee goes back to the school’s athletic program.” The surgical procedures which will be preformed on site once the surgical center is open include: arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery, endoscope spine surgery, and minimally invasive neck and back surgery. Major proce dures will still be performed ‘at the hospital, mainly Houston Medical Center. Veazey noted, “the more complicated procedures are more costly to the hospital. The hospital margins are in outpatient surgery.” Malone said outpatient surgeries cost more at the hospital - five to six more INPUT From page iA fifth grade, decreasing enrollment at Perry Primary School. The next day at approxi mately 12:05 a.m., deputies with the Houston County Sheriff’s Office responded to Bob’s Package Store, 351-A Highway 247, in reference to an alarm. Upon arrival, forced entry was found to the front door. Surveillance footage reportedly showed a green in color Ford F-150 at the business just prior to entry being made. Upon entry, wants to see the Perry Parkway completed, which will require a resolution of some wetlands issues near the city’s industrial park. Walker said that the deci sion will probably be made in mid-January. Under Georgia law, the DOT board has a member from each of the state’s 13 congressional district. The selection process is made by the members of the - than at the surgery center because of the hospital costs. “We were forced into a bat tle with the local hospital,” Malone said. Beyond preventing new ones from opening, he said, “the GACH went and sued the state to close some of the existing ambulatory surgery centers.” The Georgia Society of Ambulatory Surgery Centers won five of the cases so far to keep the centers open. “We try not to be adversar ial. Our objective is to work with the hospital,” Malone said. “Our focus is on the community.” He noted the practice brings in more patients to the area, including patients from Atlanta. “When we started in 2000, 95 percent of sports medicine and 90 percent of industrial medi cine cases were going out of the county. Now 95 percent stays here. We need to do what we can since all of the growth is here.” Malone noted the practice brings in more specialists for the hospital. At this point Walker is the only one seeking the post. Walker said that Gov. The eight physicians on staff have admitting privi leges at Houston Medical Center, Perry Hospital, and the Coliseum Medical Center in Macon, Peach County Regional Hospital and Dodge County Hospital. There are at least four doc tors at the main office in Warner Robins on any day, Pritchett said. “Houston County is grow ing rapidly and the result is a high volume of new surgi cal cases across the board,” Pritchett said. “Our new center will certainly help ease the burden at local hos pitals. For our orthopaedic patients needing surgery, it means greater convenience, less expense and reduced wait time.” The practice also pro vides physical therapy and Worker’s Compensation treatments including job site studies, job description formulation and workplace physical therapy, helping to reduce employee time off from work and medical costs. “We are the biggest Worker’s Comp provider in Middle Georgia,” Pritchett said. A commission of state legis lators, doctors and hospital administrators - the State Commission on the Efficacy of the Certificate of Need program, met in November to discuss proposed changed which are to be recom mended to the governor and the General Assembly this month. The vote on all the changes was not unanimous, Veazey noted. Veazey supports the cur rent CON program, which he said has served the state very well. He believes outpa tient surgery centers should have to apply for CONs like hospitals do. He said, “the Georgia Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee voted to close that loophole.” Malone disagrees. “CON doesn’t work. If there weren’t managed care it would work.
