Lego League Robots set to
invade Museum of Aviation

STARBASE ROBINS will
host a For Inspiration and
Recognition of Science and
Technology Regional Lego
League Robotics competition
Saturday at the Museum of
Aviation.
The opening ceremonies
will begin at 9:00 am in the
Century of Flight Hangar,
and the competition will
conclude with an awards
ceremony at 3:30 p.m.
The FIRST Regional Lego
Tournament is a qualify
ing event for the Georgia
FIRST Lego League State
Tournament, which will be
held at the Georgia Dome
Jan. 20.
17 teams from the
Atlanta, Macon and Warner
Robins area will compete
in this year s Nano Quest
challenge. Students will
compete in three rounds of
competition, and present a

According to a release, this
year s competition will be
the largest robotics tourna
ment hosted by STARBASE
ROBINS, with the number
of teams increasing from five
teams in last years challenge
to 17 teams this year.
The increase in teams
can be largely attributed to
the numerous STARBASE
ROBINS robotics academies,
which are offered during the
summer at the museum.
We offer several sum
mer academies using the
Lego Mindstorm Robotics
kits, in an effort to see stu
dents enhance their inter
est in problem solving and
engineering techniques said

STARBASE ROBINS is a
Department of Defense edu
cational program located at
the Museum of Aviation. The
program focuses on at-risk
fifth grade students, con
centrating on the basics of
aviation and space explora

learning activities. For the
last ten years, STARBASE
ROBINS has enhanced and
supplemented the Science,
Technology, Engineering
and Math education in the
Middle Georgia area.

Congressman nominates county
students to U.S. Service Academies

Congressman Jack
Kingston (R/Ga.-l)
announced recently that
three Houston County stu
dents have received con
gressional nominations
to United States Service
Academies for the Class of
2011.
The nominated students
are:
Jeffrey Nakayama, a
senior at Warner Robins
High School, who was cho
sen as a principal nominee
to the United States Air
Force Academy in Colorado
Springs, Colo.
“Jeffrey’s father served in
the Air Force for 30 years
and now he wants to follow
in his father’s footsteps,”
Kingston said. “He is an
amazing young man with
a bright future serving our
country.”
Nakayama has been a
member of the Demons’
soccer and cross-country
teams. He is also involved in
the Beta Club, Math team,
FCA and volunteers at the
Museum of Aviation. He is
also an Eagle Scout and has
participated in Governor’s
Honors.
He is the son of David
and Joanna Nakayama of
Bonaire.
Brennan Lawson, a
senior at Houston County
High School, was chosen
as a principal nominee
to the United States Air
Force Academy in Colorado
Springs, Colo.

Lawson is the captain
of the Warner Robins
Aquanauts Swim Club. He
has also been involved in
track and basketball. He is
a member of the Beta Club,
FCA and the French Honor
Society.
He is the son of Andre
and Carolyn Lawson of
Warner Robins.
Ricky Powell, a senior
at Houston County High
School, was chosen as a
Competing Alternate nomi
nee the United States Naval
Academy in Annapolis,
Maryland.
“Ricky has great lead
ership abilities and has a
strong desire to serve his
country,” Kingston said.
In addition to being an
Eagle Scout, Powell was
honored as the top cadet at
Summer Leadership School
for Air Rorce JROTC. He
attended the National Youth
Leadership conference
and was nominated to the
Kitty Hawk Honor Society.
He serves as the Support
Squadron Commander for
the JROTC program at
Houston County High.
He is the son of Frank
and Paula Jo Powell of
Kathleen.

Atlanta. Ron Galloway, a
pro-business author, film
maker and speaker will
headline the dinner the
first day (Monday). That

will gather again for the
breakfast. Newly re-elect
ed Gov. Sonny Perdue, Lt.
Gov.-elect Casey Cagle and
Speaker of the House Glenn
Richardson will all be on
hand to speak. According
to Georgia Chamber

Israel, “Each year’s Eggs &
Issues Breakfast seems to
get larger and take on more
importance, and we expect
the 2007 events to be espe
cially significant following

Dec. 1.
The academies will
announce their appoint
ments for the Class of 2011
in the spring.
Students apply for nomi
nations during their junior
year of high school. They
are interviewed by the
Congressman and the
Selection Board in the fall
and the top candidates
received nominations. Once
they have received a nomi
nation, the Academy will
then determine if they will
be offered an appointment
to the academy, an appoint
ment to the Prep School or
rejected.
A principal Nominee is
usually offered an appoint
ment as long as they meet
the basic physical and aca
demic requirements.
Competing Alternates
can also receive appoint
ments. After the Principles
are appointed, along with
Presidential appointees and
other special circumstance
appointments are made,
the academies choose from
the pool of qualified alter
nates.
Last year, in addition to
the Principle nominees,
Congressman Kingston
had three alternates go
to Air Force, two to West
Point and two to the Naval
Academy Prep School.
