Westfield head wrestling coach Clint Humphrey puts the squad through the paces during practice at the school
Wednesday. The Hornets will host nine GISA schools today and Saturday for its annual Wayne Morris Ford Hornet
Invitational.
Hornets prep for annual invite
By MATTHEW BROWN

What’s a good way to
make a young high school
wrestling team grow? How
about giving it 10 dual
matches in two days?
That’s what the up-and
coming Westfield Hornet
grapplers will face this
weekend as they host the
fourth annual Wayne Morris
Ford Hornet Invitational at
the school’s gymatorium.
According to head coach
Clint Humphrey, 10 GISA
schools are coming to Perry
to get the tournament
under way at 3 p.m. today.
The action will continue
through Saturday.
Among the strong compe
tition is two-time defending
Wayne Morris Ford Hornet
team champion Southland
Academy. The runner

dual, which means each
school will wrestle at one
time or another against all
10 of the other schools. He
said that’s a better setup for
his squad than having each
weight class in separate
brackets because everyone
will get several chances to
compete instead of possi
bly going 0-and-2 and being
done for the weekend.
“Our kids have got to get
experience, ” said Humphrey.
“We’re an extremely young
team, a lot of eighth and
ninth graders. We have one
senior and one junior. I was
pleased with our effort last
week.”
The Hornets’ best wres
tling experience lies in the
big-boy divisions. Senior
Jeremy Rowland, at 189
pounds, has been a part of
the team since his eighth
grade year. Junior Matt
Mcßride is the heavyweight
in his third year.
Westfield wrestling did
suffer a serious blow during
the football season when
senior Austin Madruga was
injured in the opening game
back in early September.
That knee injury not only
ended his high school foot
ball career, but his career
on the mat as well.
So in 2007 Humphrey is
looking for the young grap
plers to mature not only
for this season, but future
campaigns as well.

With 24 turnovers and 22
missed shots in the paint,
the Eagles lost to the Braves
62-49 for their third straight
loss in sub-region play.
“We turned it over way
too many times,” said head
coach Kevin Smith. “It was
a four- to five-point game
most of the way, but offen
sively we struggled to get
things going.”
Before the year 2006 came
to an end, Northside’s boys
were victorious in the J.B.
Hawkins Invitational at
Crawford County High with
wins against Spalding and
Central-Macon. Smith called
Central, a former region rival
now playing in Class AAA,
the best team Northside has
played so far.
“I thought we would play
better (at Baldwin),” said
Smith. “We think we have a
good team. We will get better
with games and practice.”
For now, the Eagles are
3-6 overall with the 0-3 sub
region mark. Kevyn Cooper
was the only Northside play
er in double figures scoring
at Baldwin with 15 points.
