The former assistant
basketball coach at the
University of Georgia,
Eugene Detullio, called me
recently. Now 91 years old,
DeTullio recruited my broth

when they were basketball
stars at Perry High School
during the early 19605, and
was instrumental in bring
ing them to Georgia to play
for the Bulldogs.
DeTullio had just read
my book, “Pride of the

Georgia history and Eric

This time of year is truly the season of love
The Christmas season
had not even ended
when stores began set
ting up Valentine displays.
Hey! Let’s get in a rush,
why don’t we?
Let’s just shove Christmas
on out and welcome
Valentine’s Day in - don’t
even slow down long enough
to say, “Happy New Year!”
Time spent with kids can greatly reduce the need for discipline
Question: What would
you say to my husband
and me? We are disci
plining our kids far too
much. Is there another
way to encourage them
to cooperate?
Dobson: The best way
to get children to do what
you want is to spend time
with them before disciplin
ary problems occur - hav
ing fun together and enjoy
ing mutual laughter and joy.
When those moments of love
and closeness happen, kids
are not as tempted to chal
lenge and test the limits.
Many confrontations can be
avoided by building friend
ships with your kids and
thereby making them want
to cooperate at home. It sure
beats anger as a motivator of
little ones!
Question: It has always
been my understanding

What motivates the rush

With store merchants, it is
that all-powerful dollar.
Money, money, money!
After all, that is what they
are in business for.
What motivates us to

unconditional love. That
is, the commitment to
each other should be
independent of behavior,
no matter how offensive
or unfaithful. But your
concept of accountabil
ity seems to be, “I will
love you as long as you
do what I want.”
Dobson: You’ve misunder
stood my point. The limi
tations of language make
it difficult to express this
concept adequately, but let
me try. I certainly believe in
the validity of unconditional
love, and in fact, the mutual
accountability I have recom
mended is an expression of
that love! For example, if a
husband is behaving in ways
that will harm himself, his
children, his marriage or the
family of the “other woman, ”

Question: I’m 22 years old
and still living at home. It’s
driving me nuts. My folks
are in my face every day.
They want me to get a full
time job because I only work
part time at a gas station.
Why can’t they get off my
case and leave me alone?
Dobson: With all respect,
I think it’s time for you to
pack. Many young adults
like you continue to hang
around the house because
they don’t know what to
do next. That is a recipe
for trouble. Your mother
and father can’t help “par
enting” you if you remain
under their noses. To them,
it seems like only yesterday
since you were born. They

Another Person comes
alive on the printed page,
in the Bible. He is Jesus of
Nazareth, the son of God.
A Messianic prophecy flows
unerringly through the Old
Testament from Genesis
to Malachi. As we read
its fulfillment in the New
Testament, from Matthew
through Revelation, the
promised Messiah comes to
the forefront in full splendor
stretch from Christmas to
Christmas - never ending.
Never ending love!
That is what life is all
about. Life is a “season of
love.” We never stop loving.
The best gift to offer is the
gift of self.
That’s what Jesus did for
us on the cross (John 3:16).
I see a “season of love”
find it difficult to think of
you as an adult.
The way you live prob
ably irritates them, too.
They hate your messy room.
They don’t like your music.
They go to bed early and
arise with the sun; you keep
the same hours as hamsters.
You drive the family car like
you’ve been to Kamikaze
Driving School. They want
you td get a job, go to school
- do something. Every day
brings a new argument, a
new battle. When things
deteriorate to that point, it’s
time to get out.
Question: What would
you and your wife do if your
resources permitted her to
stay at home after the kids
were in school?
Dobson: I don’t have to
speculate about the answer
to that question. Shirley
and I did have that option
