Freshen up! Odor removal in antiques
If one of your New Year’s
Resolutions happens to
be doing a major house
cleaning, perhaps these
helpful hints can help you
complete your task!
I just love the smell of old
antique furniture and hous
es! I do not, however, enjoy
the unfriendly odors that can
inhabit these treasures such
as mothballs, mold, mildew
and cigarette smoke. To
some these smells are just
part of the “provenance” of
vintage wares but for those
that want to rid their col
lectibles of offensive odors,
there are several ways to
lessen them or get rid of
them altogether.
Fresh air and limited
amounts of sunlight can
cure a lot of “musty” odors.
Sometimes just opening
doors and drawers can help.
Placing the item in a open
garage or protected place
like a carport and opening
it up will speed up this pro
cess. Placing a fan in or
near a piece of furniture and
circulating the air will help
as well.
For stronger musty odors,
try putting some baking
soda or dry carpet cleaner
in an aluminum pan in the
drawers or under the piece
of furniture.
I have heard that kitty lit
ter can also absorb offensive
odors as well. Commercial
products such as Febreeze
and such must be used cau
tiously and are intended for
fabrics, carpets and uphol
stery, not furniture. If you
use this on a vintage item,
first try it on an inconspic
uous place. Some vintage

although wood is porous and
harder to rid of offensive

Tobacco odors are a lot
harder to get rid of since it
has usually taken years to
accumulate that smell and
the odors are absorbed by
the wood and even the fin

The spirits shouldn’t harm

ings. Make sure to clean
all surfaces including insides
and bottoms of drawers and
the furniture body.
Mold and mildew are per
haps the most troubling
odors because they are
organic and can produce
problems in people who are
allergic to them. The best
way to get rid of this prob
lem is to use a little bleach
(capful per quart) in warm
water and wipe down every
single surface of the piece.
The solution doesn’t need
to sit on the surface. Mold
and mildew will be killed
on contact. Do not saturate
the piece, just use a cloth
dampened with the bleach
solution. Immediately dry
the surface after washing
with a soft cloth.
Remember, always try
the cleaning remedy on an
inconspicuous place to make
sure you won’t damage the
piece. Do not wax or pol
ish until the item has been
cleaned, dried and aired out
well or you will just trap
the odors in the wood again.
