Perdue, state lawmakers
kick off new session
By SHANNON
McCaffrey
Associated Press Writer
ATLANTA - Georgia
began another year under
Republican rule Monday as
Gov. Sonny Perdue prepared
to be inaugurated for a sec
ond term and lawmakers
streamed back to the state
Capitol to kick off their 2007
legislative session.
The hectic day of political
pomp and ceremony kicked
off with a morning prayer
service attended by the gov
ernor, first lady Mary Perdue
and more than 100 others.
The festivities will conclude
with a massive party where
guests decked out in their
finest can sip cocktails while
also keeping tabs on the col
lege football championship
game between Ohio State
and Florida.
In the afternoon, Perdue
and other statewide consti
tutional officers were sworn
at the cavernous, 19,000-seat
Philips Arena in downtown
Atlanta where Casey Cagle
is set to become Georgia’s
first Republican lieuten
ant governor. Perdue, who
four years ago became the
state’s first Republican gov
ernor since Reconstruction,
made history again when
he coasted to re-election in
November.
Among the four clergy
members who spoke at the
morning prayer service at
Northside United Methodist
Church was Perdue’s son,
the Rev. Jim Perdue. He
exhorted his father to be
God’s man.

guration, which marked a
turning point in Georgia’s
political landscape. Perdue
had pulled off a stunning
upset of Democrat Roy
Barnes and the GOP was in
its ascendancy.
This year, the Republicans
have the swagger of a party
that is firmly in charge. They
now control both chambers
of the state Legislature and
picked up the vacant lieu
tenant governor and secre

elections.
The inaugural is being
paid for by private dona

be detailed after the event.
Perdue raised $1.4 mil

bash, when more than 200
contributors donated up to
$50,000 each.
