SALARY

as mayor pro tem for 2007
following some discussion
about the procedure raised
by Councilman Clifford
Holmes. Holmes was con
cerned that the post goes
around the table based on
seniority, while the city char
ter calls for a nomination
and election bv the council.
Councilman Terry Horton
said “it’s been that way since
I’ve been on council.’’
Smith was the only one
nominated and was elected
on a 6-0-1 vote with Smith
abstaining.
“I’m not gonna die any
way,” Walker joked with the
council, “and if I do, you
have to have an election is
45 days. You can’t do too
much damage in that time.”
He also noted that only
two mayors pro tem have
fired a department head.
“My daddy was one. Bill
Mostella was the other.”
The council also made a
couple of appointments. Jim
Elliott was reappointed city
attorney and Robert Sisa,
who served as chief build
ing inspector, was appointed
a community development
director, formerly held by
Jesse Fountain, who has
retired but has been con
tracted as a consultant by
the city.
The city council also
approved up to $60,000 from
the unobligated general fund
to pay for a new engine and
transmission for the recently
purchased and serviced used
city charter bus. Recreation
Director James Dodson said
they took the bus to Chicago
for maintenance by MCI. On
the way back the transmis
sion froze up and the engine
threw a rod. “MCI didn’t
detect anything during their
inspection,” Dodson said,
but they are willing to assist
us with SIO,OOO. The repairs
also include a 3-year, 300,000
mile warranty, something
the bus did not have when
purchased through MCI a
few months ago.
The city council also
approved 12 bids, including
four annual contracts for
manholes, concrete pipe, rock
and stationary, as well as the
purchase of two new police
cars and a used 2006 Crown
Victoria from Brannen Ford
in Unadilla. The bids also
included $69,100 to Stantec

Police also have tips to
