Knee Implant Available
for Women
w
■ he differences between men
and women go tar beyond Mars
and Venus. Recent research shows
that women and men are different
even when it comes to total joint
replacement specifically the knee
According to l)r. Daniel 15.
Wagner, an orthopedic surgeon
specializing in total joint replacement
and member ol the medical stalls ot
Houston Medical ( enter and Perry
Hospital, tvpical knee replacement
implants are designed based on the
average si/e of men's and women's
knees. " \ new gender-specific knee
implant manufactured by Zimmer is
the first and only implant designed
to specifically lit a woman's
anatonn." he explains. "It is
contoured to better lit the anatomical
shape of a w oman's knee."
Studies indicate that women suffer
from more knee pain and disability
than do men As a consequence, the
number of women has ing knee
replacement surgeries has grown
significantly during recent years.
.According to the I .S, Department
of Health and Human Services, more
than 400.000 people in the Ended
States have their knees replaced each
vcar and nearly two thirds ot them
are women.
A Walk on the Wild Side
Hold on parents and teens! This Senior
Camp is not for the young of age. but lor
the Noting at heart! Sponsored by Houston
Healthcare's Senior Care program. Senior
Camp is an annual two-day event pros iding
health education and entertainment to active
senior adults. Each year, more than 100
senior adults gather together at Ro/ar Park
m Perry to learn about proper nutrition,
how to live with arthritis, how to manage
their medication, gardening tips, happenings
in their community and much more.
Michelle Lee. Houston Healthcare
Community Education Nurse and
Senior Care Coordinator, says she tries to
make the Camp exciting and fun for the
seniors In having a different theme each
year. This year, campers will take a ’walk
on the wild side' among safari and jungle
inspired decorations and activities.
"Everyone is encouraged to wear their
Indiana Jones outfits or head hunter gear.'
says Lee. "It will be a tun and educational
way to spend a couple of days."
According to Lee. Senior Camp is
about socialization as much as it is about
"With traditional knee implants,
orthopedic surgeons frequently have
to make adjustments during surgery
to make them fit their female patients
better." says Dr. Wagner, who
alreadv has performed 11 knee
replacement surgeries on patients
using the new implant. "This new
gender-specific implant eliminates
the need to make those types ol
corrections."
"Knee replacement surgery may
be recommended if early treatment
options do not stop the joint pain."
states Dr. Wagner "dotal knee
replacement involves removing
portions of the damaged bone and
replacing them with an implant so
that the normal functioning of the
knee is not changed."
"Joint replacement is a personal
decision. When knee pain becomes
less of a mere nuisance and more of
a disability, a patient should seriously
consider ha\ ing the procedure."
comments Dr. Wagner A joint
replacement usually results in a
predictable decrease in pain, and for
most patients, the long-term outcome
justifies the temporary discomfort ot
surgerv and the stringent exercises
required during recovery."
Dr. Wagner, along with otliei
