exemplary students and com
munity members have been
named the newest recipients
of Chick-fil-A’s Leadership
Scholarship, a national
program that has awarded
more than 21,000 individual
scholarships to support res
taurant employees seeking
higher education.
Pinkins, O’Gorman and
Dungea bring the schol
arship total to 43 at the
free-standing Chick-fil-A
restaurant at Sam Nunn
Boulevard, which is oper
ated by David Grossnickle.
Deadline approaches for teacher Hall nominations

The deadline is nearing
for nominations for the
Houston County Teacher
Hall of Fame.
They are due by Jan. 17
for consideration in the ini
tial induction.
Those making nomina
tions must complete an
official nominating form
to be accompanied by let
ters of recommendation
and a portrait-style pho
tograph of the nominee.
Specific criteria will be used
to select the initial Hall of
Fame members, including:
■ Retired from the sys
tem in 1975 or earlier;
■ Twenty years of class
room experience in Houston
County preferred
■ Degrees held
■ Proof of quality teach
ing
■ Significant contribu
tions to student success
■ Involvement outside
of the classroom, such as
a sponsor of extracurricular
activities.

Houston County educators
and school system gradu
ates has been appointed
by Superintendent Danny
Carpenter to select the first
honorees to be inducted into
the Hall of Fame. The com
mittee members are Matthew

Scholarships have attend
ed over 2,138 institutions
across the country and have
gone on to pursue careers

Alan Bowers, a teacher
at Houston County High
School, has been select
ed to participate in the
Professional Association of
Georgia Educators Teacher
Academy.
The academy, according
to a release, is designed to
enhance the skills of teach
ers with fewer than four
years experience who show
great promise.
Teachers from across the
state were recommended
by their district leaders for
the 30 competitive posi
tions - 10 each for elemen
tary, middle and high school
levels. Finalists were cho
sen by former PAGE lead
ers, PAGE members and
National Board Certified
Teachers who served as
peer reviewers.

the academy.

Pete Golden with Georgia Emergency Management Agency visited Perry Middle
School teacher Diana Phillips’ computer classes Dec. 4, 2006, to teach students
about Internet safety and cyber bulling. According to a release, the students were
“very receptive and expressed their idea that perhaps their parents and other adults
could benefit from the same information. ” To that end, Golden has agreed to host an
Internet awareness class slanted toward adults, and Phillips and he are working on
an agreeable time to make that happen in the future. In the picture, Golden speaks
to the students.

The teachers also attend
