UGA finishes 23rd in final poll
By Marc Weitter
Morris News Service
ATHENS - Georgia
returned to The Associated
Press top 25 poll Tuesday.
That may seem like small
consolation today since
the team its fans love to
hate, Florida, is No. 1 and
national champions.
By finishing 23rd,
Georgia can at least say it’s
the only team in the nation
to finish ranked in the final
AP poll each of the last 10
seasons. No. 13 Texas has
the second longest active
streak at nine followed by
Oklahoma with seven.
Georgia (9-4) still failed
to land a spot in the USA
Today coaches’ poll.
Three straight wins over
top 20 teams to finish the
season including a 31-
24 win over then No. 14
Virginia Tech in the Chick
fil-A Bowl wasn’t enough
to be ranked in that poll.
The Bulldogs finished

two steals in the first quar
ter. Bebe Brown also had
a steal and basket in the
first quarter, but Jackson
knocked down the short
range jumpers to go up 14-
11 after eight minutes of
play.
Brown had another
steal plus a stick-back to
bring Perry within two in
the second quarter, 18-
16. The Lady Panthers
had the turnover ratio
going in their favor most
of the quarter, with other
steals coming from Ashley
Roberts and Rachael Bass.
But field goal shooting was
not in their favor with just
three baskets overall.
With three late give
aways, Perry fell behind by
eight at the half.
The second half was all
Lady Panthers. With West
making a 3-pointer, Kim
Burgess cashing in an
inbound pass and West tak
ing a steal the other way,
the game was tied 29-all.

lead.
Perry’s stagnant offense
woke up late in the half. A
trey by Hubbard at under a
minute to go helped bring
the Panthers within four,
29-25, at the break.

OVERTIME
From page 2B
Willis’ biggest contribu
tions came late in the
second quarter, early in
the third. Warner Robins
trailed 15-13 after one.
(Jackson hit a 3-pointer at
the buzzer to make it that
deficit.) Worse, the Demons
were getting beat pretty
badly on the boards - it
was not uncommon to see
Tift County get three tries
before sinking a bucket.
“That’s something we’ve
talked about and talked
about,” Malone said. “And
something we have got to
get better at.”
Willis was held to a sin
gle basket in the first quar
ter. But, with the Demons
trailing 23-20 with 3:53
before the break, he hit
a jumper. Miller hit two
free throws and Kenneth
Fluellan another before
Willis connected again, this
time for a trey.
That came with 1:11
before the break. The Blue
Devils hit a trey with 28
seconds but that still didn’t
keep Warner Robins from
leading at the half 28-26.
Willis again hit a trey,
this time to open the third
quarter, and then scored
two more baskets that
quarter. The Demons were
THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 2007 *
one spot out of the top 25,
nine points behind Penn
State.
Georgia’s final AP rank
ing is its lowest since the
Bulldogs were 22nd in
2001. The Bulldogs’ chanc
es of a fifth straight top
10 finish ended when they
lost four of five games at
midseason.
“We know we’re very,
very close to being at least
an 11-2 ball club but we’re
also very close to being
a team that had a losing
record, too,” Georgia coach
Mark Richt said a day after
the bowl game. “It was one
of those kind of seasons.”
The Bulldogs will have to
wait until Oct. 27 to get its
shot at the national cham
pion Florida Gators, who
crushed favored Ohio State
41-14 in the BGS nation
al title game on Monday
night. Sophomore quarter
backs Matthew Stafford of
Georgia and Tim Tebow of
Florida should square off.
At 4:50 of the third quar
ter, Brown’s 3-pointer put
the home team up for good
at 34-31.
Burgess and West gave
Perry back-to-back scores
on the offensive glass (40-
33). Brown, with another
steal, put back her own
miss, then later broke
away for two more points.
With that onrush, the Lady
Panthers ended a 27-point
period to lead 46-36.
Brown had three 3-point
ers in the game, including
one at 4:45 of the fourth
for a 20-point bulge (58-
38). She finished with 19
points.
Burgess had 12 points to
go with two blocks in the
first half. Bass had seven.
“I’m impressed with
the improvement,” said
Bradley after her team’s
third win overall. “We had
33 rebounds for the game,
16 offensive and 17 defen
sive. We stole the ball 18
times. In the first half the
shots didn’t fall, but the
defense got better in the
second half.”
baskets off the offensive
glass in the third quarter,
those shots coming from
Askew, Roderick Jones
and Trey Smith, But each
time Jackson returned to
the other end to make a
two-point lead a four-point
lead.
With 1:04 left in the
third, Askew stole the ball
near half-court and took
it in the other way (42-41
Jackson). Jackson did not
answer this as Hayward
took a rebound and scored
with some fancy dribbling.
Walker, the impact player
late in regulation, stole an
inbound pass at the side
line and put Perry on top
45-42 going to the fourth.
5-of-12 from the field
during that period - Tift
County was 4-of-8.
“I believe if we had hit
some of the shots we could
have,” Malone said in refer
ence to that cold-shooting
timeframe. “It (the final
score) would not have been
nearly as close as it was.”
Still, Warner Robins out
scored Tift County 13-11
and took a 41-37 lead into
the final eight minutes.
It was 47-45 in favor of
the Demons with nearly
four minutes left to play.
The Demons, with posses
sion, milked that down to
just over two but a turn
over gave Tift County the
ball with 44 seconds left. It
then scored to tie it and set
up Reid’s miss in regula
tion - Warner Robins start
ed the play with 16 seconds
showing - but also his sec
ond-attempt connection in
overtime that help spur the
Demons on to victory.
Note: Warner Robins’
previously rescheduled
(back during football)
game against Northside
has been cancelled to make
way for the Demons and
Demonettes to make up the
game they lost to inclement
weather this past Friday
at Lowndes. The Warner
Robins at Lowndes game
is slated to take place Jan.
27.
