Demons win in overtime
By DON MONCRIEF
Journal Sports Editor
Instead of getting down,
Ryan Reid appeared to take the
approach: “Give me another
chance coach.”
Reid missed a jumper at the
end of regulation that would have
given Warner Robins’ boys an
earlier win over Tift County.
So, it was only fitting then that
he get the first try into overtime.
He promptly took
a pass on a break
down the middle
and put it in for
a layup to spark
the Demons on a
6-0 run to open
the extra period.
They went on to
win 61-51, subse
quently picking

up their first Region 1-AAAAA
win - in as many tries, Tuesday
at home.
“He’s the one guy I’ve got to get
more out of,” said Warner Robins
boys head basketball coach Chip
Malone in reference to the foot
ball players that joined the team
a few weeks back and where that
particular group is in terms of
getting their “basketball legs.”
One player he didn’t have to
worry about getting more out of
was Xavier Jackson.
“He had a great game,” Malone
said. “He hit all those free throws
and he played great defense, too.
Kenny Willis also hit some big
baskets for us when we needed
them.”
As far as Jackson, his contri
butions included an 8-of-8 per
formance at the charity stripe.
How important were those?
Aside from Reid’s opening bas
ket, that was the only time the

Perry’s Casey Hayward crashes the boards in the Panthers’ game at home against Jackson Tuesday.
By MATTHEW BROWN

With no field goals in the last min
utes of overtime, Perry High School’s
Panthers took a
65-62 home loss
Tuesday to Jackson
High in a meeting
of north and south
sub-region teams in
Region 4-AAA.
Perry was ahead

was the last Panther basket from the
floor, Jackson High
worked its way back
to a tie, 62-62, and
broke it by making
just one of two foul
shots after an inten

The visiting Red

Down by three, Perry was unable
to put points on the board at the foul
line and missed a potential tying 3-
pointer at the buzzer when it earned
possession via a jump ball.

Kittery Maine scored a double
double, 16 points and 10 rebounds,
to help lead Warner Robins’ girls
to a 48-41 Region

at home over Tift
County.
“She’s grown
up a lot,” said
Demonettes head
basketball coach
Tom Mobley
Warner Robins girls

whose squad improved to 11-
2 overall. “She’s a lot tougher
... more mature.” She’s already
signed but that - her newfound
leadership - he added he thought
was a result of colleges calling
her.
“I think it woke her up,” he
said. “She realized ‘these guys
want me, I’ve got to start doing
something.’”
As well as Maine did, it was Tift
County’s Lindsay Walker, a play
er Mobley said he had been told
had signed witli Clemson, that
attempted to steal the show early.
She had 11 points in the first
quarter - nine of them coming off
3-pointers. Her efforts enabled the
Lady Blue Devils to take an 18-11
lead into the second quarter.
Then, however, Mobley changed
strategies. He began to employ a
man defense that included a com
bination of Maine, Cherie White
and Shayla James shadowing her.
Their efforts resulted in

There would not have been over
time had not an official waved off
a late Jackson lay-up. Jackson took
possession after a Perry turnover
with 3.2 seconds showing, but had to
go the full length of the court.
The Devils found an open man
at the basket, but an official
emphatically ruled that the buzzer
sounded before the basketball was
released.
Perry also would not have had
an extra opportunity to win with
out the contributions of Michael
Walker. Before he hit a 3-pointer
early in overtime, his defensive play
caused an over-and-back turnover
