Museum of Aviation honors the 116th Bomb Wing
Special to the Journal
The Museum of Aviation,
in a ceremony Wednesday,
honored the 116th Bomb
Wing with the dedication of
a restored B-1B bomber.
The 116th Bomb Wing
flew B-1B Lancers at Robins
Air Force from 1996 to 2002.
It deactivated in 2002 and
its members became part of
the 116th Air Control Wing
which currently flys E-8C
Joint STARS aircraft.
The guest of honor at the
ceremony was former 116th
Bomb Wing Commander,
Brig. Gen. Tom Lynn, who
led the unit from 1998 to
2002. Lynn, a veteran of

The Houston County
Board of Education
approved the 2007 meeting
schedule during its monthly
meeting. The Board typical
ly meets twice a month. The
formal session is held the
second Tuesday of the month
at 1 p.m. at the Board of
Education located at 1100
Main Street in Perry. The
work session is held the
Monday evening prior to the
second Tuesday unless that
Monday falls on a holiday.
The work sessions are held
at 6:30 p.m. at various
schools. Special meetings
are called as needed.

Macon. Mid Summer Macon,
in partnership with Wesleyan
College, was established in
1987 as a nonprofit organi
zation to provide a summer
arts education program for
children.

Robins Federal Credit
Union announced recent
ly the continuation of its
Most Excellent Senior Team
Scholarship program.
Established in 1997, the
scholarship, according to a
release, “demonstrates the
credit union’s support for
education, and its desire
to help qualified members
with the cost of attending
school.”
Over the past 10 years,
Hamlett completes from Undergraduate Pilot Training

Air Force Capt. Kenny
W. Hamlett has graduated
from Undergraduate Pilot
Training at Columbus Air
Force Base, Miss.
The student completed 190
flying hours in either the T
-37, T-38, or T-1A aircraft, 62
flight simulator hours, 342
academic hours, 105 offi
cer training hours, weather
training for flight plans, and
the fundamentals of aircraft
handling, instrumentation,
formation, and night flying.
At the end of training,
Hamlett received an aero
nautical rating of pilot in
the Air Force, competent
and qualified to perform the
duties and accept responsi
bilities thereof.
He is the son of Tony S.
and Dianne L. Hamlett of
River West Road, Bonaire.
His wife, Amanda, is
the daughter of Cathy J.
Edwards of McArthur Blvd.,
Warner Robins.
Hamlett graduated in
more than 30 years service
with the Air National Guard,
became the first commander
of the new 116th Air Control
Wing in 2002 setting a
precedent of an Air National
Guard officer command
ing the first blended Air
National Guard/active duty
flying wing in the U.S. Air
Force.
During his command of
the 116th Bomb Wing, The
wing received its 10th and
11th Air Force Outstanding
Unit awards. He now serves
in the Pentagon as Special
Assistant to the Deputy
Chief of Staff for Logistics,
Installations and Mission
Support, Headquarters,

The program has expand
ed through the years and,
according to the release,
“gives children and teens
the opportunity to explore
their artistic talents in the
art disciplines of theatre,
visual arts, music, dance and
creative writing. Students
will be supported while
encouraged to stretch their
creativity and expand their
talents.”
First Night Macon 2007
was held Dec. 31, 2006. First
Night Macon is a family ori
ented, alcohol free, commu
nity wide New Year’s Eve
celebration that marks the
passage from the old year
the release states, the pro
gram has given more than
$130,000 to qualified stu
dents.
In April of 2007, five, four
year scholarships of $4,000
each will be awarded to
graduating seniors who have
been accepted at (and will
attend) a college, university
or vocational school in 2007.
This scholarship is based on
a one-page essay, scholastic
performance, extracurricu
lar and community activi

degree in 2001 from Georgia
Institute of Technology,

116th Bomb Wing his
tory
The 116th Bomb Wing
heritage goes back to 1942
when it was formed as the
353rd Fighter Group flying
the P-47 Thunderbolt. The
unit flew on D-Day and in
many WWII campaigns, fin
ishing the war with 35 aces
and over 300 kills of enemy
aircraft.
In October 1945 the 353rd
Fighter Group was redes
ignated as the 116th FG
and allotted to the Georgia
National Guard at Dobbins
AFB, Georgia. During the
Korean War it flew F-84
attack missions against

North Korean forces. From
1952 to 1961 it flew F-51s,
F-84Fs, F-84Ds and F-86Ls
at Dobbins AFB. In 1961 it
converted to the C-124 and
in 1974 to the F-100D. From
1979 to 1996 it flew F-105s,
F-4Ds and F-15A/B Eagles.
It converted to the B-l
Bomber in 1996 and moved
to Robins AFB. In 2001, the
116th became part ’of the
first ever “Blended Wing”
of active duty and ANG
personnel. As a testament
to the enduring efforts of
its members, the 116th Air
Control Wing stood up on 1
October 2002 operating the
Joint STARS aircraft.
