industrial ceramics. In the
1920 s the company began to
produce beautiful art deco
style figurines and animals.
A problem later arose with
the cellulose finish from
that line in the 1930 s when
it was discovered that the
cellulose broke down and
peeled off. The company re
issued that figural line with
new longer wearing high
gloss glazes.
When World War II broke

civilian wares ceased so
the factory could produce
goods for the war effort.
If only you would feed them
My family has never
been cat people.
Growing up, we
always had dogs - spaniels,
setters, retrievers, great
dogs and general nuisanc
es.
We never had cats, except
for when my sister was a
baby and then one time
when we were preteens.
That was a sweet little cali
co named Daisy who some
how stood her own with the
dogs in the yard. However,
one day she decided to take
a nap in the fan of the
family station wagon. When
our parents told us later
what had happened to our
beloved pet, it was quite
a scene for us two young
girls.
Oh, and then there was
the time a stray came up in
the yard and, while I was
feeding it some scraps, it
inadvertently bit me. My
mother freaked, especial
ly since a couple of days
later, the cat lay dead in
the yard. Was it the victim
of the dogs, or of rabies?
Fortunately for me, not
the cat, it was the former,
and I never had to take the
shots that my classmates at
school said were 10 inches
long and had to be taken in
your stomach - all 15 or so
of them.
My husband, on the other
hand, grew up with cats
more so than dogs. When we
began dating, they had two
cats who lived in the house,
and one of them followed
him around like a dog. In
fact, she was exceptionally
jealous of me. She would
sit in between us, and was

What was Stone Mountain
called before it was called
Stone Mountain?
The “whimsies” were first
produced in the 1960 s in
several different series such
as circus figures, nursery
rhyme characters, animals,
sea life, people, and houses.
The dogs and monkeys
were especially popu
lar. Wade partnered with
Redßose tea in Canada
producing tiny figurines as
a premium for tea buyers.
This advertising campaign
proved to be so popular that
it was expanded to the U.S.
market in the 1980’s.
These little collectibles
are quite colorful and inter
esting and don’t take up a
lot of display area.
An old printer’s tray
hung on the wall makes the
perfect display area. Wade
Whimsies are also very
affordable.
You can find the com
mon ones for just a few
dollars. The older ones and
rarer figures will of course
be more expensive but still
quite reasonable as a col
lectible. It can be fun to try
and assemble a particular
collection such as the nurs
ery rhyme or circus series.
Happy collecting!

the cat-lovers would say. I
was not fooled.
You know that feeling of
being watched? I got that
often at their house, and
would look around to find
the black cat glaring at me
from her perch on top of the
fridge or the back of a chair.
Pure hatred filled her eyes,

That has all changed
recently. A sweet gray cat
has taken up residence
at her house. Despite her
resolve to keep it from
becoming a permanent fix

has persevered. Of course,
it didn’t help that my hus

and she was not amused
when the cat displayed her
devotion for her new mis
tress by bringing up, in no
particular order, the fresh
carcasses of mice, squirrels
and rabbits to deposit on
the steps under the carport.
And then throwing up on
her car.
My mother-in-law, with
her wealth of cat wisdom,
bought some food for the
cat so that she would be
satisfied with that instead
of the fresh kill, and that
has helped some. Of course
it has guaranteed that the
cat, already named by my
son, thinks it has found a
home forever.
As I said, she’s a sweet cat,
and likes to get underfoot,
which worries my mother,
who has no desire to get
tripped up and to fall or to
see her pregnant daughter
take a belly flop either.
But as I said, the cat seems
to have found a home.
Only problem is, she must
have put out a memo to her
cat friends, because I have
seen two others lurking
around in the past week.
“Is this the place with the
free food? Looks good to

I suppose it’s true: if you
feed them, they will come.
They will stay. And they
will bring guests.
