ALABAMA Built in 1899 with rough-hewn
lumber and weathered shingles, the Gilliland-Reese
Covered Bridge was restored and relocated in the 1960 s
to Noccalula Falls Park in Gadsden (pop. 38.978).
ARKANSAS —Billed as the nation's longest
bndge built for foot and bicycle traffic, the Big Dam
Bridge spans the Arkansas River and links Little Rock
and North Little Rock. The 512.5 million bridge is 3,463
feet long and nses 65 feet above the navigation channel.
FLORIDA Opened in 1963, the Thunder
bind Drive-in in Fort Lauderdale is among the nation’s
largest drive-in movie theaters. The theater boasts 13
screens and doubles before dusk as the Swap Shop with
vendors selling their wares on 88 acres.
GEORGIA —A 7-foot bronze statue of musician
Otis Redding, best remembered for his soulful song
"(Sittin' On) Tlie Dock of the Bay,” is in Gateway Park
in Macon. Redding, who was bom in 1941 in Dawson
(pop. 5,058), recorded the song four days before he died
in an airplane crash in 1967.

film stars Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Her
1949 photo of Pollock, dangling a cigarette from his lips,

LOUISIANA —ln 19.34, machinist Ernest Han
sen of New Orleans invented a Sno-Bliz motorized ice
shaver for making syrup-flavored “sno-ball” treats at his
city stand. Granddaughter Ashley Hansen continues
the sweet family business and maintains the beloved
city landmark.
MISSISSIPPI —Fossils of ancient shark still can
be found at W.M. Browning Cretaceous Fossil Park
near Booneville (pop. 8,625). The park overlooks a
stretch of Twenty Mile Creek at Frankstown where an
abundance of vertebrate fossils were uncovered during
highway construction.
NORTH CAROLINA— in the 19505,
trucking company owner Malcom McLean invented
container shipping, whereby a tractor-trailer can be

all-black school opened lose fall as the Green McAdoo
Cultural Center museum to tell the story of the 12
black students who first attended Clinton High School.
In 1956, Clinton became the first Southern town to de
segregate a public high school.
VIRGINIA —Sam Snead won 82 Professional
Golfers' Association (PGA) tournaments, more than any
golfer in history. He was born in 1912 in Ashwood.
WEST VIRGINIA —One of the most influen
tial labor leaders of the 20th century, Walter P Reuther
served as president of the United Auto Workers from
1946 to 1970 and helped develop the workingman’s
benefits package, from healthcare to pensions. Born in
1907, Reuther grew up in Wheeling (pop. 31.419).
