Board dedicates center in honor of Ragin
By NANCY HAWK
Journal Staff Writer
The Herman C. Ragin
Center became the offi
cial name of the old Perry
Elementary School at 1200
Main Street in Perry.
In a ceremony Sunday at
the Eric P Staples Board
Office, the center was offi
cially named in honor of
Herman C. Ragin Sr.
“This is a great day to
honor a great man,” said
Superintendent of Schools
Danny Carpenter.
Master of ceremonies,
Michael Roberts, made men
tion of several childhood
memories, but his descrip
tion of Ragin was as “the
kind of man, when he spoke,
you did exactly what he said
no questions asked.”
Added Inez Brewton, a
teacher who worked for
Ragin felt: “This is one
special moment in time
that speaks to the history
of Perry and to Houston
County. This is a great
day.”
She continued, “In 1964 a
principal hired a new teach
er out of college. Herman
C. Ragin was an awesome
principal. I cannot recall
him ever being late or ever
being absent! Ragin was
a one-of-a-kind principal
dedicated to his school. He
was a principal of all trades
and could be found opening
soup cans or just helping in
the lunchroom.
“Some days he would
(even) be changing a tire
or even jump starting a car
(for others).“
