Special to the Journal
Congressman Jim
Marshall, D-Macon, visited
the offices of the District
Attorney of Houston County
last week to discuss issues of
interest to government law
yers.
Marshall visited for almost
two hours and met with the
lawyers from both the dis
trict attorney’s and the pub
lic defender’s offices. Issues
discussed included student
loan forgiveness for govern
ment attorneys, student
loan enhancements for gov
ernment attorneys, the war
in Iraq, the world hot spots,
illegal immigration and the
federal budget. Marshall was,
as always, very forthcoming
on what he sees as likely
to happen, and likely not
to happen, on Congressional
issues, said District Attorney
Kelly Burke.
Marshall toured the
Houston County Courthouse,
including a sneak peek at
the tunnel connecting the
courthouse and jail, and saw
Houston County’s state-of
the-art courtrooms. Being
a lawyer, Marshall was
impressed with the facilities
in Houston County and rec
ognized all of the good work
that goes on in our court
house.
“Congressman Marshall
was very gracious to spend
time with my staff discuss
ing the relevant issues of the
day,” Burke said. “Loan for
giveness, or at least expan
sion of federal student loan
programs, is a crucial ele
ment in encouraging more
young attorneys, particularly
minority attorneys, to enter
the fields of prosecution and
public defense.”
Burke said Marshall “gave
a realistic picture of what
is possible on that front, as
well as his assessment of
hot button world issues. His
service to our community is
appreciated and admired.”
