The Houston County High
chapter of Family, Career

of America, according to a
release, is “putting youth
in charge to ‘make a life’
for themselves and others in
their community.”
Members, according to the
release, are taking the lead
to give their time, energy,
talents and skills through
the FCCLA Community
Service national program.
FCCLA Community
Service projects are created,
carried out and evaluated by
youth.
“In FCCLA, young peo

members have a heart for
young children, especially
ones who are in need of spe
cial attention.”
Because of that concern,
the release continued, they
chose Project Linus as their
focus. Project Linus is a
100 percent volunteer non
profit organization with a
two-fold mission: First, to
provide love, a sense of secu
rity, warmth and comfort to
children who are seriously
ill, traumatized or otherwise
in need through the gifts
of new, handmade blankets
and afghans, “lovingly” cre
ated by volunteer “blanke
teers.”
Second, to provide a
rewarding and fun service
opportunity for interested
individuals and groups in
local communities, for the
benefit of children.

The HCHS FCCLA chap
ter members recently took
donations, bought fabric and
created 20 blankets.
The blankets, according to
the release, are unique in
that the two sides of fabric
are tied together instead of
requiring sewing.
These “colorful” blan
kets were taken to Houston
Medical Center children’s
floor and presented to chil
dren who were there. There
were enough left over to
leave for future patients.
“I was touched by the reac
tions of the parents,” said
Dara Smith, chairman of the
FCCLA project, who were so
appreciative that someone
else is thinking of their child
at a time like this.”
FCCLA, according to the
release, is the only in school
student organization that
focuses on the family.
