football program, we need
a top-notch weight facility,”
said Scott, adding that all
Perry High athletes make
use of the school’s weight
room. He said the top col
lege football programs all
over the nation have “unbe
lievable” weight rooms.
Thomas said he feels
good about living in
Georgia again, particularly
Houston County, as he lived
in Jacksonville during his
career with the Jaguars
and Dolphins. He said he
has other plans regarding
Georgia when he wore the
Gator uniform.
Well, maybe I shouldn’t
be so totally and completely
against Chicago. The Bears
have the one and only play
er in the entire game that I
have met.
Before the University of
Oklahoma made the name
Adrian Peterson a house
hold name in Heisman
Trophy chases, Georgia
Southern University fea
tured the original AP who
went on to have one of the
greatest careers for a run
ning back in college football
history.
This Adrian Peterson
just completed his fifth sea
son with Chicago after the
Bears made him a sixth
round draft pick out of the
Statesboro college in 2002.
In the Super Bowl, we’re
more likely to see him on
the special teams, where he
has 53 career tackles.
But running the football
is how everyone should
remember Peterson as a
Georgia Southern Eagle.
He had 36 straight games
of 100 yards or more on
the ground, 54 such games
overall and scored a nation
al record 524 points.
With playoff games includ
ed, Peterson had 1,378 car
ries for 9,145 yards and 111
touchdowns.
I had the chance to see
him gain a few of those yards
- not to mention interview
him - while attending Eagle
games as a media member.
Because of his size and the
way he played, I couldn’t
help but think he would
actually, leave Georgia
Southern early for the NFL
Draft. It didn’t happen, but
Peterson’s had the shot at
the big leagues he richly
deserved.

Benson will be the ones who

A better stance is demonstrated.
Now that your stance
is correct, you can deliv
er great golf shots to the
course.
Have a question about
golf or need help with your
football, such as running
camps for high school play
ers in Middle Georgia so
they don’t have to go as far
away as Atlanta for the pro
fessional experience.
“I want to bring players
here and let (the kids) know
they can make it,” said
Thomas. “If they work hard
and keep their grades up. I
hope it motivates the kids,
motivates the parents and
motivates the community.
“I want them to see that
professional football play
ers are regular people, that
championship fate. But if it
should come that Peterson
gets called into backfield
duty, my favoritism may
shift. (Colts rookie Tim
Jennings is the only Bulldog
listed on either roster, after
last year we had the Most
Valuable Player in Hines
Ward.)
Peterson came into the
2006 season with 581 career
yards and 123 carries, and
with Jones and Benson
being so strong this year
he had just 10 totes for 41
yards. His shining moment
in the NFL would be his
120-yard game against San
Francisco.
There are some other
Georgia Southern issues
I must address before the
news becomes older than
the sinking of the Titanic.
Another year brings
another coaching change
in Statesboro. Brian
VanGorder is out, opting to
once again coach lineback
ers in the NFL, and Chris
Hatcher of Valdosta State
is in.
I’ll start with VanGorder,
now an assistant with the
Atlanta Falcons. Remember
that he left his defensive
coordinator’s position with
the Georgia Bulldogs to be a
linebackers coach with the
Jacksonville Jaguars. That
journey only lasted one
year as he jumped back to
college in December 2005,
with Georgia Southern as
head coach.
VanGorder was one of
my interview subjects up in
Macon last summer during
the state’s Pigskin Preview
media day. The theme of
our discussion was change,
as in how GSU needed to
change to keep up with the
championship chase.
Did Georgia Southern
hire VanGorder just for his
name recognition? Did he
quickly lose favor with the
game? Go to www.krags
golf.com and email me your
question.
If chosen, your question
could be featured in an
upcoming article.
it’s a job like any other.”
Thomas is also a fam
ily man, and the 2006 sea
son was tough because his
wife and children stayed in
Centerville while he played
in Buffalo. He said all deci
sions about his playing
future will be “family deci
sions.”
As for the 2007 season,
Thomas becomes a free
agent on March 1. He said
he’s already been contacted
by Bills general manager
Marv Levy about returning
to Buffalo.
strong Eagle backers with a
dismal 3-8 record?
We have seen new coach
es enter programs and
have great success (like Les
Miles at LSU) with players
brought in by the previous
administration. VanGorder
could only be as good in
year No. 1 at GSU as what
he had to work with. If the
money the Falcons offered
was so much better, or things
weren’t what he envisioned
in Statesboro, VanGorder
made his choice.
And so Georgia Southern
made another choice with
Hatcher, who has a Division
II national title to his credit
at Valdosta. If people didn’t
think VanGorder was going
to keep the traditional
triple-option offense alive
there, Hatcher is sure to
bury it for good.
Hatcher followed in
Hal Mumme’s footsteps
of spreading the field and
throwing, throwing, throw
ing. Will he have the per
sonnel at GSU right off the
bat to do this? That’s kind
of the direction VanGorder
was going, and players
probably already commit
ted to the Eagles with those
skills.
I met and interviewed
Hatcher at the same Macon
Pigskin Preview event the
summer before he led the
Blazers to the title. I just
might see him again this
year to talk about his new
job.
His quality as a coach
notwithstanding, Hatcher
could very well end up with
the same kind of record in
that first year.
Or maybe he has the
magic touch that will take
the Eagles back to the I-AA
(I think it has a new name)
championship game. I know
he won’t promise any mira
cles, but only some exciting
football.
