Woman found dead
outside church
EAST POINT (AP) Police
are investigating the kill

found dead Sunday morning
just outside an East Point

“She did have obvious

Gray said the cause and
time of death are unknown.
The woman has not been
identified, he said.
A member of the congrega

Democrats back
kids health funding
ATLANTA (AP)
Democratic leaders
in Congress have asked
President Bush to pro
vide funding for the State
Children’s Health Insurance
Program - including
Georgia’s Peach Care pro
gram - in his budget
request.
In a letter to Bush, Senate
Majority Leader Harry Reid
and House Speaker Nancy
Pelosi asked the president
to submit a separate spend
ing proposal to cover a
$745 million federal short
fall threatening children’s
health insurance programs
for lower income families in
at least 14 states.
“Unless we act quickly
to provide additional funds
to this important program,
we are putting the health
coverage of thousands of
Americans in jeopardy,” the
letter said.

Seniors walk miles to keep fit
CANTON (AP) - A couple
dozen seniors have walked
more than 40,000 miles in an
effort to keep fit since their
Cherokee County-based
club, Canton Senior Walking
Club, started in 2002.
One of the charter mem
bers, 60-year-old Nancy Hill
of Woodstock, recently was
honored by the Canton City
Council fo r being the first
member to reach the 5,000
mile mark.
“Walking keeps me in good
shape,” Hill said. “I want
to be healthy as I get older,
because I have a lot I want
to do.”
The club started July 1,
2002, with seven members
and now includes 25, said
Canton Senior Activities
Coordinator Lowell Lawson.
Together, they’ve logged in
enough miles to go around
the world one and a half
times, Lawson said.
“The beauty of this is that
you don’t have to spend any
money, other than on a good
pair of tennis shoes, so it’s
the least expensive of all
activities,” said Lawson, 72,
of Hickory Flat.
“Plus, it’s convenient, you
can walk anywhere, at any
time you want.”
The club is open to any
one who’s 50 and older,
regardless of where they
live. Members keep track of
the distance they walk and
report it to Lawson once a
month by phone.
Lawson said that the club
not only provides a health
benefit, but also gives mem
ber the satisfaction of accom
plishing something, especial
ly as they move from one
“club level” to another.
There are five levels in
the club: The Century Club
is for members who have
walked 100 miles or more.

HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL
Medallion level members
have walked at least 1,000
miles,
“Being part of the pro
gram gave me the incentive
to walk on a regular basis,”
said one of the Medallion
members, Councilman Wade
Buchanan, who at 78 has
walked 1,725 miles. “It’s
also provided me with an
opportunity to reach my goal
of walking four miles every
day.”
Buchanan said that his
doctor suggested he start
walking after having a hip
replacement in 2004. He
joined the club to get encour
agement in 2005 and said he
hopes to receive an award
for walking 2,000 miles in
April.
The other club levels are
bronze medallion for more
than 2,000 miles, the sil
ver medallion level for 3,000
miles, gold medallion for
4,000 miles or better, and
Hill's platinum level at 5,000
miles.
All participants receive
a certificate for every 100
miles they walk, and a crystal
trophy for each 1,000 miles
covered, Lawson said. The
mayor and council members
also recognize the walkers
for their accomplishments
during the presentation,
which usually is done at city
council meetings.
