Demonettes run past Valdosta
By MA TTHE W BR () WN
Journal Sports Writer
On one of the more
remarkable defensive plays
that can occur in a basket
ball game, Warner Robins
High’s Demonettes turned
a tight basketball contest
into a runaway Saturday at
home. Warner Robins closed
out the home season with a
55-37 Region 1-AAAAA win
against Valdosta High.
It was a tied game, 10-
10, right at the start of
the second quarter when
Demonette guard Symone
Wilkerson found herself as
the ‘l’ lone defender of a
2-on-l Valdosta break. As
the Lady Wildcats tried
an exchange in the paint,
Wilkerson beat the odds and
came up with the steal.
Not only did she have the
takeaway, but she also sped
down to the other end, made
a smooth pass to Cherie
White and saw Warner
Robins take the lead for
good. The basket was part of
a 10-0 run that also included
a field goal for Shayla James
when she stole a Valdosta
inbound pass.
Warner Robins had a 10-8
lead after the first quarter
with five of the points com
ing from offensive rebound
ing.

weekend games

The Westfield Schools basketball teams may
both be sporting 1-3 records in GISA’s Region
3-AAA, but both Hornet teams are looking at
today’s meeting with Southland as a way of
staying out of the region cellar for the upcoming
championship tournament.
On Friday, Deerfield-Windsor defeated
Westfield’s girls 64-28 in Albany. The Lady
Hornets were unable to break double figures in
scoring in any of the four quarters, getting a high
of nine in the fourth.
Haley Way, who did not play Tuesday against
Sherwood Christian due to a sprained ankle,
recovered enough to see action on Friday and
lead Westfield with 12 points.
“It was never close,” said head coach Jeff
Eubanks. “We didn’t turn it over as much, just a
lot of one-and-done possessions, and they would
make their shots or get second shots.”
Westfield’s girls were able to rebound, both lit
erally and figuratively, in a Saturday non-region
win in Macon, 42-27 against Windsor Academy.
Eubanks had five girls get five rebounds,

Willis, Miller lead Demons over Wildcats
Colquitt deals Warner Robins its second region loss
By MA TTHE WBRO WN
Journal Sports Writer
Kenny Willis had 27 points and Pierre
Miller added 18 as Warner Robins High
blitzed Valdosta High 91-70 Saturday, one
night after the Demons came within one
shot of knocking off Colquitt County High
in Moultrie.
On Saturday, the Demons pulled away
from the Wildcats with a first-quarter run
of 12 points in a row. It all started when
Willis drew a foul after attempting - and
making - a 3-point basket. The rare four
point play gave Warner Robins at the time
a 12-6 lead.
The Demons, Miller in particular, had
more work in mind from outside the arc.
The point guard pushed the basketball
quickly to his offensive end, but brought it
outside rather than take on Valdosta’s tall
frontcourt. His next action was to drain a
3-point shot.
On Warner Robins’ next possession,
Miller stayed outside and connected again.
Mark Wright Jr. concluded the run steal
ing Valdosta’s inbound and putting the
Demons ahead 20-6.
Miller sank one more trey as the first
quarter was coming to a close. Warner
Robins went into the second up 27-12.

County Championship held Friday at Warner Robins. Houston County won the title. Check

County championship
to 13 down (37-24) in the second, Kenny
Fluellen took a turn hitting the ,3-ball
with less than three minutes to play. The
visitors missed a chance to get back within
13 by not converting a three-point play at
1:35. To close out the half, Warner Robins
got points from Justin Cowart’s baseline
jumper and a fast break pass from Miller
to Fluellen.
The score was 47-28 at the break.
Xavier Jackson had a pair of assists to
Willis in the third quarter, one from inside
the paint for a trey outside and the other
a long, low transition feed. It was a good
quarter for Ryan Reid in terms of scoring
and an assist from up top to Fluellen in
the lane.
It was 69-47 Demons at the end of the
third.
Fluellen finished with 11 points while
Laron Scott had nine and Reid six.
The one time on the weekend Warner
Robins didn't get a shot to fall when it
most counted, was in Friday’s 80-79 loss
at Colquitt. It was only the second Region
1-AAAAA win for the Packers, who got the
other one last weekend at home against
Houston County.
Miller had 29 points and C.J. Jackson
27.
Colquitt led by 13 with 4:30 remaining,
