Air Force contractor to pay $1.52M
By RA Y LIGHTNER
Journal Staff Writer
An aircraft mechanic was
awarded $1,523 million for
injuries sustained while
working at Robins Air Force
Base.
A Gwinnett County
jury awarded Francisco
Trevino and his wife, Maria
$1,523,000 for injuries he
sustained from a 30-foot fall
from an aircraft wing stand.
Trevino, who lives in Warner
Robins, was completely dis
abled by the accident, Moore
said.
Trevino, a civilian employ
ee at the base, suffered
multiple fractures and has
undergone two surgical pro
cedures, according to his
attorney W. James Moore
of Moore & Hawthorne of
Atlanta.
The suit was filled against
an Air Force contractor,
First Support Services, Inc.,
formerly known as SKE
Support Services, which was
manufacturer of the wing
stand and the locking pin
that failed, causing Trevino’s
fall. The suit was filed in
Gwinnett County Superior
Court because First Support
Services’ registered agent in
the state of Georgia is in
Norcross, Moore explained.
“They fabricated the lock
ing pin and installed the pin.
They had the duty to inspect
it,” Moore said. “The inspec
tor had no training at all.”
Moore said the company
had a contract to provide
maintenance and preventive
maintenance inspections for
ground support equipment,
including the C-5 wing
stand. “The absolute fail
ure to provide any special
ized training to its quality
control inspector, along with
other factors contributed to
this unfortunate incident,”
said fellow attorney, Marc D.
Hawthorne.
Moore said the defense was
that the pins were not defec
tive and Trevino “should
have known something was
wrong. They tried to say he
was negligent.”
Moore said First Support
Services has two other law
suits pending against it - one
in Middle Georgia District
Court involving another
serious injury and one in
Jacksonville, Fla., involving
a death.
“This is a very important
verdict in that it sends a
message to military contrac-

tors that cutting corners at
the expense of safety will not

said.
The Gwinnett County jury
deliberated 10 hours before
reaching its verdict, Moore
said. Superior Court Judge
Ronnie K. Batchelor heard
the case.
Officials at Robins AFB
did not wish to comment on
the award since “legal and
personnel folks feel this is
