AKA sets day of worship for Sunday
By RAY LIGHTNER
Journal Staff Writer
The Sigma Epsilon Omega,
Gama Pi Omega and Epsilon
Omega Omega chapters of
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
have begun their countdown
to the centennial hirth date
of the sorority.
One of the first of several
local events is this Sunday.
Confronting an alcoholic
requires careful maneuvering
Question: My husband
drinks excessively. Aside
from getting help for my
family, what should I do
specifically for him? How
on earth am I going to get
him to go to Alcoholics
Anonymous or some similar
treatment program? He is
deep in denial and couldn’t
make a rational decision to
save his life. How am I going
to get him to cooperate?
Dobson: You're right
about the difficulties you
face. Begging won't accom
plish anything, and your
husband will be dead before
he admits he has a problem.
Indeed, thousands die each
year while denying that
they are alcoholics.
That’s why Al-Anon
teaches family members
how to Confront in love.
They learn how to remove
the support systems that
prop up the disease and per
mit it to thrive.
They are shown how and
when to impose ultimatums
that force the alcoholic to
admit his or her need for
help. And sometimes, they
recommend separation
until the victim is so miser
able that his denial will no
longer hold up. In essence,
Al-Anon teaches its own
version of the “tough love”
philosophy to family mem
bers who must implement
it.
Expressions of love
Expressing sentiments
of Valentine’s Day,
one sixth grade stu
dent wrote: “On Valentine’s
Day we think of our friends
and especially our family.
We think of love and friend
ship.”
From another sixth
grader came these lines of
rhyme: “Valentine’s Day is
one of the best of the year.
It’s when everyone is happy
and full of good cheer.”
A card made by a second
grader portrayed a furry
i little creature dressed in
‘ red.
Printed across the little
creature’s shirt was this val
entine message: “I gopher
you.” Inside the card, the
message was completed to
read, “I hope you gopher

The AKA Day of Worship
will be held at Fellowship
Bible Baptist Church on
Dunbar road in Warner
Robins beginning at 10:45
a.m according to Assistant
District Attorney Erikka

the Sigma Epsilon Omega
Chapter.
On Feb. 18, a commemo
I asked Bob, a recov
ered alcoholic, if he was
forced to attend Alcoholics
Anonymous - the program
that put
him on
the road
to recov
ery. He
said: “Let

this way.

do that evening. Everyone
there has been forced to
attend initially.
You don’t just say, ‘On
Monday night we watched
a football game and on
Tuesday we went to the
movies.
So what will we do on
Wednesday? How about
going over to an AA meet
ing?’
It doesn’t work that way.
Yes, I was forced - forced
by my own misery. My wife,
Pauline, allowed me to be
miserable for my own good.
It was loving duress that
moved me to attend.”
Though it may sound easy
to achieve, the loving con
frontation that brought Bob
to his senses was a delicate
maneuver. I must re-empha-
me, too.”
Reflecting on the expres
sions of my young friends, I
was impressed by the inspi
rational nature of each.

tie in with 1 John 4:19: “We

size that families should
not attempt to implement
it on their own initiative.
Without the training and
assistance of professional
support groups, the encoun
ter could degenerate into
a hateful, vindictive, name
calling battle that would
serve only to solidify the
drinker’s position.
Al-Anon Family Groups
and Alcoholics Anonymous
are both listed in local
phone books. Also to be
found there is a number for
the Council on Alcoholism,
which can provide further
guidance.
For teenagers with alco
holic parents, there is
Alateen.
Teens can go there and
share without their parents’
permission or knowledge,
and it’s free.
Question:: If a man and
woman really love each
other, won’t that hold their
marriage steady when the
storms come?
Dobson: Not necessarily
- and certainly not if you
are thinking of love as a
romantic feeling.
Feeling wonderful about
each other does not make
two people compatible over
the long haul.
Many couples assume the
excitement of their court
ship will continue for the
rest of their lives.

A tragedy
with a message
Marilyn Monroe was
to Hollywood dur
ing the 1950 s what
Jean Harlow was during the
1930 s - its top sex symbol.
Born Norma Jeane
Mortenson in 1926, Marilyn
Monroe became a famous
model and movie starlet.
She was arguably the most
beautiful woman in the
world. But as grandmother
Powell always said, “Beauty
is only skin deep.” Beneath
Monroe’s
veneer
of great
beauty
was a very
insecure
young
woman
who

to the
adulation
of men

and the misuse of drugs
to satisfy the emptiness of
her heart. She was mar
ried three times, once to Joe
DiMaggio during 1954 and
to playwright Arthur Miller
from 1956 to 1961.
Monroe was found dead
at her home in the early
hours of August 4, 1962, due
to acute barbiturate poison
ing. She was naked, in a
semi-fetal position, her face
unmade-up, her hair in a
mess and her room in disar
ray.
Although she reportedly
had threatened to take her
own life on occasion, new
evidence has surfaced that
implies the possibility she
was murdered.
Whether she was forced
to swallow a handful of pills
in one gulp or was adminis
tered a lethal injection by an
unknown party is still open
to conjecture.
Monroe was drawn to pow
erful men. As the FBI already
knew, she had been having
a dalliance with President
John F. Kennedy since before
his election in 1960. She
reportedly also had trysts
with his brother Robert
Kennedy, the U. S. Attorney
General. Compounding mat
ters, Monroe forged a close
association with Frederick
Vanderbilt Field, an
unabashed Communist sup
porter under constant fed
eral surveillance. She also

According to the Alpha

Mexico Communist Party
members, who shared com
mon interests with the Soviet
Union. A month before her
death, the FBI filed a report
that Monroe had attended
a luncheon at the residence
of actor Peter Lawford with
President Kennedy in atten
dance. Subsequently, FBI
Director J. Edgar J. Hoover
went to the White House
allegedly to warn Kennedy
that his womanizing posed a
security threat to the United
States.
Monroe’s hairdresser
wrote in a memoir released
in 1997 that the starlet
called him the night before
her death, saying: “Robert
Kennedy was here, threat
ening me, yelling at me.
I’m having an affair with
him, I had an affair with
JFK as well.” Obviously,
the Kennedy brothers had
wanted to cut off contact
with Monroe. When Monroe
was found dead, she had a
telephone clutched in her
hand. Scrawled on a piece
of paper in her bedclothes
was a White House phone
number.
It was foolhardy for men
that were public figures and
more importantly, married
men, to have extramarital
relations with Monroe.
Nothing good ever comes
from these indiscretions. A
year after Monroe’s death,
in 1963, President Kennedy
was killed by an assassin’s
bullet as he rode in a motor
cade through Dallas, Texas.
In 1968, the President’s
brother, Robert Kennedy,
was assassinated moments
after he claimed victory in
the California Presidential
Primary.
End result: three untimely
deaths. It is beyond me to
judge. If there is a mes
sage in this tragedy, let him
who has wisdom unravel its
meaning.
