Know the putting basics; clinics
Jack Nicklaus once said.
“You can recover from a
poor drive or approach; but a
missed putt is a stroke gone
forever.”
Did you know that half of
a golfers’ total score could be
strokes made on the putting
green?
With the golf season
approaching fast, it is a great
time to get back to the basics
and practice your putting.
Here are a few basic tips to a
consistent putting stroke.
GRIP
■ Hold the putter with the
palms of your hands facing
each other and parallel with
the clubface. This will make
you to grip the club in posi
tion that allows the arms to
swing the putter in a pendu
lum motion.

another drive? As much
as Indianapolis owned the
football, in the fourth quar
ter the Bears were still one
more Hester-like (even
though he was no longer
getting the kicks his way)
breakaway from turning it
back in their favor.
I guess that’s when most
of the media decided to take
a break. Nobody wanted to
leave his or her seat dur
ing the halftime show.
What they missed was the
play of the game, the one
that sealed the deal for the
Colts. Kelvin Hayden picks
off Rex Grossman and goes
56 yards for a touchdown
at the start of the fourth,
giving him as many points
and Manning earned with
his arm.
But then again, who is
really going to win the MVP
of this game? How many
commercials has Hayden
done? Was Hayden a No.
1 draft pick? How many ad
campaigns can you build
around a back-up defensive
back?
Manning, for his part,
had a good game. But so did
Dominic Rhodes, who went
into the game No. 2 on the
running back depth chart.
Still, he had as many touch
downs rushing as Manning

did passing.
Then I have to take
another factor into consid
eration. Fans take part in
the MVP voting. According
to Superßowl.com, cell
phone toters accounted for
20 percent of the tally.
Fans also vote for injured
players to start All-Star
Games, like Yao Ming for
this year’s NBA contest.
Back when a Super Bowl
MVP was based on football
common sense and not a
popularity contest, some
one like Desmond Howard
of the Green Bay Packers
and Larry Brown of the
Dallas Cowboys would win
it for making the game
changing plays, not any
of the Hall of Famers on
the roster for just merely
showing up.
And I love the debate
about Manning’s greatness
now that he has a Super
Bowl championship. We
may never see Manning is
this position again, which
means he will have as many
championships as Trent
Dilfer, Brad Johnson and
even Ben Roethlisberger,
who still might surpass
him.
Brett Favre plans on
returning to Green Bay,
and if he gets Randy Moss
as a target he could one-up
Manning.
Or Manning may win the

On Wednesday I had the
honor of bearing witness to
nine of the county football

I couldn’t help but

Georgia that was not going
to take place.
For those who may have
missed the story, several
weeks ago Jackson High
School star receiver John
Keye was killed in an auto
mobile accident.
Back during the 2006
football season, Keye and
tys Jackson team were pre
paring to play Perry High
School here, and I was able
to report that he had com
mitted to the University of
Kentucky.
Those who attended a bas
ketball game between Perry
and Jackson saw Keye as a
major force in the interior,
leading the Red Devils to an
overtime win.
I congratulate everyone
from our Players of the Year

it, and even if you aren’t a
