Lawyer: Accused gunman’s guilty plea offer rejected
ATLANTA (AP) - A man
accused of killing four peo
ple in a shooting rampage
that began inside a court
house offered to plead guilty
to murder in exchange for
the state taking the death
penalty off the table, but a
prosecutor rejected such a
deal, the defendant’s lead
attorney said Thursday.
Brian Nichols has been
willing to plead guilty to
the deaths of a judge, court
reporter, sheriffs deputy and
federal agent in exchange
for a sentence of life in pris
on without parole, Nichols
lawyer Gary Parker told The
Associated Press.
“What has been the state’s
response to that? No,”
Parker said in an exclusive
interview. He said the offer
was made again as recently
as three weeks ago.
Relatives of two of the vic
tims previously told the AP
they would support a plea
deal for a sentence of life
in prison without parole. A
third victim’s family opposes
a deal, while the fourth has
not taken a position.
“It brings closure, and it
would bring closure now,”
Parker said.

Hartsfield-Jackson airport may offer
faster security lanes - for a price
ATLANTA IAP)
- Some passengers at
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta
International Airport may
soon be able go through
special security checkpoints
that will be quicker.
But it will come at a cost.
The airport would charge
users an annual fee _ proba
bly about SIOO. Users would
undergo background screen
ing similar to a credit check.
They would then be issued a
special card that would con
tain biometric information
such as fingerprint, iris or
other information specific to
that person.
Once a person’s security
information is cleared by
the Transportation Security
Administration, that person
can use the private security
lines. The passenger would
still have to walk though
a metal detector and bags
would still go through an
X-ray.
The world’s busiest air
port plans to seek proposals
for the system from private
companies within six weeks.
It could be operating on a
limited scale at checkpoints
by June, airport officials said
Thursday.
The airport would imple
ment the “Registered
Traveler” system as a 3-year
pilot program, with the abil
ity to cancel it with 30 days
notice if problems occur.
“It appears to be working
in Orlando,” Airport General
Manager Ben DeCosta said.
“We’ll have a competition
and pick somebody to try
it.”
Some passengers said they
were looking forward to the
program.
“I’d sign up for it in a
heartbeat,” said Kevin
Jones, a Vinings loan offi
cer who flies at least twice
a month. “The convenience
would sell it for me. If I can
get through security in just
a few minutes, it’s a big
deal.”
Others were not so sure.
Kim Roman, a college
counselor from Alpharetta
who flies once a month, said
she probably would not be

interested in the pay-for
convenience lines.
“Security is not that big of
a deal for me,” Roman said.
“I usually get through in 10
minutes or so now.”
Roman also had concerns
about a private company
compiling so much informa
tion on travelers and the
potential for its misuse.
“It kinda creeps me out,”
Roman said. “It’s sort of like
Big Brother is watching all
the time.”
And she isn’t the only one
with concerns about the pro
posed security lanes.
Debbie Seagraves, execu
tive director of Georgia’s
American Civil Liberties
Union, said her organiza
tion has problems with the
program.
“The main one is that it’s
based on a faulty premise to
begin w'ith,” she said. “It’s
based on the, theory that if
you have a good credit his
tory, you won’t be a terror
ist.”
She said the system also
establishes a caste system
among flyers.
“There’s something inher
ently classist about the idea
that you don’t have to be
inconvenienced if you can
pay a little more,” she said.
