Pancakes, fast cars shift
Scouts into high gear

What does it take to get a Cub Scout out of bed first thing Saturday morn
ing? At Crossroads United Methodist Church, the answer was clear: plenty
of pancakes and lots of excitement as their own home-crafted race cars flew
down a track to the finish line. The pancakes, served with plenty of syrup,
scrambled eggs and juice went fast, but the brightly-painted cars, which the
Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos made with help from their parents and
grandparents, went faster. The top speed, clocked by Benjamin Hall’s car,
was 192 miles per hour. Winners in the competition were as follows:
Tigers: first place, Benjamin Hall; second place, Patrick Walker; third
place, Kevin Bandt.
Wolves: first place, Will Byrd; second place, Kevin VanCise; third place,
Aaron Stinebaugh; Bears: first place, Matthew Lawson; second place, Zach
Pierce; third place. Adam Jones.
Webelos: first place, Mark Ray; second place, Vinnie Steffanini; third
place, Dallas Ray.
Family division: first place, Keri Hall; second place, Will Steinbaugh, Sr.;
third place, Bruce Brandt.
Also. Aaron Steinbaugh took the pack award for most unique design.
Other design winners were Adam Park, Zach pierce, Mark Ray and Hayden
Steinbaugh.

Man dies
in wreck
Alcohol a factor;
deceased ejected

Hernandez of Bonaire was
killed Friday in a wreck on
Ga. 247 at Booth Road.
On that day at 7:04 p.m.
the Houston County Sheriffs
Office Traffic Division was
dispatched to a serious col
lision at the intersection of
Ga. 247 and Booth Road.
According to Cpl. Sean
Alexander, Houston County
Sheriffs Office Traffic
Division Supervisor, the
1994 Pontiac Firebird being
driven by Hernandez, was
southbound on Ga. 247 and
approaching the intersec
tion of Booth Road. A 1996
Pontiac Grand Prix being
driven by Joseph Caum from
Warner Robins, was north
bound on Ga. 247 approach
ing the intersection of Booth
Road.
Hernandez was traveling
too fast for the conditions of
the roadway as he attempt
ed to change lanes, said
Alexander in a press release.
Hernandez lost control of
the Firebird and slid side
ways into the northbound
lanes of travel.
Caum applied his brakes
and attempted to avoid the
crash, Alexander said.
He was unable to avoid
the collision and struck the
Firebird in the passenger
door area.
Hernandez, who was not
wearing his seatbelt, was
ejected out of the vehicle.
He was pronounced
deceased at the scene by
EMS personnel.
Caum, his three family
members and a young friend
were all transported to the
Houston and Macon Medical
Centers for treatment.
Alexander said they are all
out of critical condition, but
have a lot of recovery and
physical therapy remaining.
Additional surgeries are also
planned for treat ment of the
injuries sustained in the
crash.
Hernandez was not
licensed and alcohol does
appear to have been a factor
in the collision, Alexander
said. The crash is still under
investigation.
