Lawmakers hold Family
Day at the Capitol
By Tom Marine
Morris News Service
ATLANTA - Lawmakers
invited families to the
Capitol for a rare Saturday
session of the Legislature
called “Family Day.”
In addition to showing
the government in action,
the event featured displays
from several state agen
cies and an appearance by
“Buzz,” Georgia Tech’s
mascot.
“It’s great to let the fami
lies come here to see the
(legislative) process and
participate in it,” said Sen.
Bill Cowsert, R-Athens.
Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle
explained that process to
visitors as the Senate voted
and passed four pieces of
legislation.
Two of those bills,
Senate Bill 34 and Senate
Bill 71, were the product
of GeorgiaSpeaks.com, a
Web site intended to boost
citizen participation in law
making.
SB 34 prohibits inmates
from having access to pho
tos of their victims, and
SB 71 requires that special
elections only be held on
certain dates, preferably
when other elections are
being conducted.
The House unanimously
passed four minor bills with
out debate, most repealing
outdated or unused provi
sions in existing law. About
75 people looked on from
the visitors’ gallery, roughly
the size crowd on a typical
weekday session.
The House visitors were
asked to join the legisla
tors in a brief moment of
silence for the victims of
a courthouse rampage two
years ago, one block from
the Capitol.
The killings had just
happened the day before
the first Family Day, and
those participating then

In keeping with the
somber mood, Rep. Barry
Fleming, R-Harlem, was
joined by three other law
makers as he announced
a resolution in support of
U.S. Rep. Charlie Norwood,
R-Augusta, who is suffering
from terminal cancer.
“He has indeed been a

Before Family Day kicked
off, the Working Families
Caucus held a rally across
the street on the steps of
Atlanta City Hall to build
support for Senate Bill 13,
legislation aimed at raising
the state’s minimum wage.
A number of legislators
were in attendance and
spoke to the crowd.
“This caucus symbol

“It may be a cold day

be a cold day in hell before
we stop fighting for an
increase in the state mini
mum wage.”
