Perry’s Jared Fluellen goes in for a basket against a Northeast player in the Panthers’
win over the Raiders Friday at home.
Panthers earn No. 2 spot
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
Perry High’s boys basketball Panthers
had much at stake on Friday when they
closed out the regular season at home. Not
only did they want to shake off a bad week
of road losses at West Laurens and Central-
Macon, but also they wanted to avoid a
play-in game just to carry on in the Region
4-AAA tournament.
When the scoring load is balanced in a
Perry game, that’s good news for head coach
Brett Hardy. That’s what he got in that
critical contest Friday, and the Panthers
knocked off Northeast-Macon 77-60. That
puts Perry at 10-4 in the region and the No.
Perry girls win, gain play-in shot

Perry High School’s girls basketball squad
needed a victory on Monday to extend the
2006-2007 season into the Region 4-AAA
tournament. The Lady Panthers had home
court advantage against Peach County on
Monday, but it was a home loss on Friday,
62-59 to Northeast-Macon, that forced Perry
into the south sub-region tiebreaker.
In Friday’s loss, Perry’s Kim Burgess
hit a bank shot from the left side of the
goal with 21 seconds remaining to bring
the Lady Panthers within three. Northeast
missed two free throws, but Perry’s last
shot for the tie was taken a bit too far, and

“I’m proud of the way they responded to
that,” said Hardy. “I don’t think they played

and that was to make sure we didn’t have to
play that play-in game.”
One of Perry’s four region losses was to
Northeast in Macon on Jan. 23.
“They blocked 13 shots against us there,”
said Hardy. “And they hurt us on the glass.

the Raiderettes held on to send the Lady

Despite a loss to Coffee
County 84-69 Friday,
Warner Robins’ boys still
ended up the No. 1 seed in
Region 1-AAAAA.
The Demons, based on
that position, automati
cally earn a bye in the first
round of the region tourna

cally qualify for the state
tournament.
The details surround
ing their top seed were as
follows explained Warner
Robins boys head basket
ball coach Chip Malone.
To start with, that - earn
ing the top seed - would
have come into play had Tift
County beaten Lowndes.
It didn’t and that put the
Demons, Coffee and Tift
County into a three-way
tie.
From there, the decision
went to head-to-head com
petition.
“We all three - in head
to-head competition - fin
ished the same,” Malone
said. “So then it went to

En route to an 85-

play-in game loss Friday
at and to Northside, the
Bulldogs netted exactly
that number in each of the
first three quarters of play.
That was good news after
one. With the Eagles scor
ing only 12 - five of those
coming from the free-throw
line and three more coming
from a trey - Dutchtown
(14-12) led.
But Northside (10-12),
on a 7-0 run, fought back
to a tie early in the sec
ond quarter. From there,
the lead changed hands six
times.
That is, until with 30
seconds left before the
break, Kevyn Ward scored.
