“We played hard, played
smart, but just could not
hit a shot,” said Walls.
He said his goal for the
third quarter was to get
within nine or 10, but
the Hornets did better by
closing the gap to seven,
33-26, at the end of the
period. Walls used a group
of sophomores, including
Joel Revis, John Thomas
Rust and Casey Young,
who played “outstanding”
defense and led Westfield
to a 37-36 lead with four
minutes to play.
But the lead didn’t last.
Southland surged ahead
by four and made the free

Breaststroke just as tough,
qualifying with a time of
1:12.92, swimming the

In the 200 Medley Relay
with teammates Kaitlyn
Merrifield, Kimberly
Niemantsverdriet and
Melissa Boston, the group
qualified with a time of
2:04.44. They were just
over that - 2:04:47 in the

24th out of 35 teams.

who had two - that would
be “points”; Manish
Vashi, class of 1996,
also with two; and Clint
Talton who finished with
nine, one of his a 3-point
er.
And then there were
the ladies.
The low score might not
have been indicative, but
in regard to the White
team, they too could
shoot long.
They made seven 3-
pointers en route to their
win. (There were none by
the Yellow team.)
Three of those treys
belonged to Mary
Katherine Walker of the
class of 1997. She fin
ished with 13. Class of
2005 teammate Ashley
Gray was just behind her
with 12 points - and a 3-
pointer.
The rest of the White
team’s scorers were as
follows: Wendy Way,
class of 1986, 10 points;
Amanda Murph, class
of 2003, seven points;
Sally Velasquez, class of
1989, two; April Pearson,
class of 1993, one. Melis
Jamison, class of 1989,
was unfortunately shut
out.
Leading the Yellow
team, which did nearly
half its work at the free
throw line - it was six
of-nine (the White was
two-of-four), was class of
2003 graduate Stephanie
Thompson. She had 10
points.
Teammate Laura
Posey, class of 1999 and
faculty member Jolene
Ciccarelli, had eight.
Kimberly Pritney, class
of 1989 and Dawn Jerles,
class of 1981 each had
two. Deena Walton, class
of 1985 had one.
Last but not least was
Hannah Barrett of the
class of 2002. The event
was a benefit for the
Perry Animal Shelter,
which she is in charge of.
Her contributions on
the night: Two points
(free throws). As the
saying goes in her case:
“Don’t quit your day job.”
No really! Don’t quit your
day job because, editori
ally speaking, what you
do is bigger than basket

utes.
“I was glad we came out
focused in the second half,”
said Walls. “When you’re
down like that, it’s easy to
not finish the game. But I
was proud of them.”
John Feake had 12 points
for the Hornets. Matt Amrit
was also in double figures
with 10.
The Westfield girls draw
Southland on Friday while
the boys take on Sherwood
Christian.
The winners of each game
will have the No. 3 seed in
their respective GISA AAA
state brackets. The first
round of state is Feb. 21-
22 at Stratford Academy
in Macon, and 3-AAA is
paired with 1-AAA, which
includes the top-ranked
boys team from North Cobb
Christian.
and Carriker qualified in
the 200 Free Relay.
They qualified for state
with a time of 1:50.53.
They knocked some off of
that - 1:50.19 but that was
only good enough for 24th
place in a field of 36.
“We need,” added
Richardson in regard to the
program’s continued suc
cess, “more students from
the middle school level
learning to swim competi
tively, and we need rising
eighth graders to come to
the team and look to make
a contribution to our suc

“We have a great pro

We hope they’ll look to be a
part of that.”
