Remember when
A journey back to 1874
By NANCY HAWK
Journal Staff Writer
In the modern world
everything is there for the
asking. The choices are
many and our time has a
value that we still do not
understand. This journey
takes readers to a time
where choice was, “what
you see is what you get.”
Where services may have
been available, they cer
tainly were not available 24
hours a day and Sundays.
The Houston Home
Journal of 1874 describes
Perry in this way: “Capital
of the county is a flourish
ing place on the Big Indian
Creek, a large tributary of
the Ocmulgee, one of the
best water sites in the state
for manufacturing. It is in
the geographical center of
the county. Population of
the city is 1,800. It has
handsome buildings and
communication is by rail
road, with all cities in the
state.”
The county is described
similarly but the economic
figures are a more interest
ing picture of the county in
that year ... It contains 900
square miles of territory
and farms valued in 1870
at $2,539,497.
Farm production in 1870
was worth $2,500. Cotton
that year quantified at
15,000 bales and corn was
363,000 bushels. The par
ticular article written on
the subject credits the city
of Macon as being the main
reason for the economic
success in Houston County.
Macon then was reported
as a city of 6,000 inhabit
ants.
Of interest to a visitor to
the county might be that
the climate “of the county
is considered very healthy
... except for a slight ten
dency toward a mild type
of Malaria disease.” The
county its physical self is
described as: “soil is gen
erously and easily culti
vated, people are moral
and refined.”
One of the outstand
ing inventions during
this time was the Eclipse
Cotton screw press. R.
Findley and Son’s Iron
works sold the machine,
which bailed cotton into
12 rounds. It had won an
invention award just the
year before in 1873, at the
Macon state fair.
Just as in many news
papers today, Legal notic
es were very common,
but not very detailed.
One such matter follows:

What did it cost to buy
food basics? While there are
a collection of breads or
butters at all groceries now,
the list of grocery market
prices was just basic, which
anything else needed often
being made at home.
There is no explanation
of the change in egg prices.
No significant weather or
significant changes as in
rail or other transport.

The post office was

Unusual events
Through the course of the
paper most of the events
were pretty much of legal
or social significance, but
there was an event Aug.
8, 1874 that caused some
attention.
It is as follows: “Two
Perry rings: Thursday
about half past 10 - two
rings about the sun were
