Peggy Brett and Donna Gunter’s second graders at David Perdue Primary pay close attention to the puppet show
“Use your Wits, Not your Mitts, ” performed for them by Houston County High Family, Career and Community Leaders
of America members Paige Bickford, Ginny Johnson and Kaylie Sims. The puppet show, according to a release,
“helped the students know how to recognize, report and reduce bullying.” The students were given “warm fuzzies”
to remind them to be an encourager instead of a discourager. Chapter advisers are Nelda Clay and Jane Cooper.

Fifth-graders at David Perdue Elementary enjoyed a performance of “Use your Wits,
NOT your Mitts,” presented by Houston County High FCCLA chapter members Jessica
Floyd, Savannah Albin and Heather Nelson, as a part of the chapter’s STOP the Violence
project. The students also viewed country singer, Mark Wills’ " Don’t Laugh at Me"
music video and received treats that said “Don’t be a Dum-Dum, Use you Wits, Not
your Mitts!”
Houston County High FCCLA
takes a stand against violence
Special to the Journal
Violence seems to be every
where for today’s young peo
ple.
From grade-school bul
lies to video games to tragic
school shootings, students
all over the country observe
or experience violence on a
regular basis.
To that end, Houston
County High Family, Career
and Community Leaders of
America members are taking
steps to address youth vio
lence and, according to the
release, “make their schools
and community more aware
of what it takes to reduce
it.”
“There’s no one solution
to youth violence, but we can
help to make a difference,”
said Kaylie Sims, chairman
of the chapter project. “We
can change attitudes, teach
skills, and connect students
to resources that will help
them recognize and reduce
potentially violent situa
tions.”
The HCHS chapter is
working hard to make this
happen, Sims said. FCCLA
members have created and
produced an educational
puppet show, “Jed and the
Kid, Use Your Wits, NOT
Your Mitts” that address
es the issue of bullying in
schools.
The peer education pro
gram is part of the National
FCCLA STOP the Violence
campaign. The project is
custom-made for the group
that the FCCLA mem
bers are working with and
enables FCCLA members to
learn, teach, and communi
cate among themselves and
to others, the importance of
recognizing, reporting, and
reducing bullying in our
society.
The puppet show was per
formed for Jocelyn Napier’s
Family and Consumer
Sciences class at Feagin Mill
Middle School, Peggy Brett
and Donna Gunter’s second
graders at David Perdue
Primary and the entire
fifth-grade at David Perdue
Elementary.
The students were pre
sented with “Warm Fuzzies”
reminding them to be aware
of others’ feelings, STOP
the Violence planners and
suckers that read “Don’t be
a Dum-Dum, Use you Wits
not your Mitts.” Some of
them also watched FCCLA’s
STOP the Violence video
and country singer, Mark
Wills’ “Don’t Laugh at Me”
