Warner Robins holds off Northside for win
By DON MONCRIEF
Journal Sports Editor
Warner Robins traveled to
Northside Tuesday and picked up a
6-2 win on the baseball diamond.
The game was closer than the
score indicated, although it didn’t
look that way at first.
The Demons, with a five-run third
took the early lead. That inning start

a corner kick, Tift County

of Tuesday’s boys soccer
match at Warner Robins
High School. The Blue

what was only the second
match so far in the 2007
season for the Demons, but
it was the first in Region

Demonettes hang on for victory over Blue Devils
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
It was a tense final 15 min
utes, but the Warner Robins
High girls soccer team was
able to hold off visiting Tift
County High on Tuesday
for a 2-1 win in the second
match for the Demonettes
in the 2007 season. The win
gives Warner Robins’ girls
an earlv 1-0 mark in Region
1-AAAAA.
Brittany Hill of Warner
Robins scored with 28 min
utes left in regulation to
give the Demonettes a 2-
0 lead. Her goal became
much more significant with
less than 15 minutes to
play when Tift County was
awarded a free kick deep in
its offensive end. That kick
went directly into the net,
and Warner Robins’ lead
was slimmed back down to
one at 2-1.
That whole sequence of
events didn’t sit well with
new Demonette head coach
Phil Daly. He received a yel
low card for his efforts. But
that wasn’t the only testy
moment of the second half
as minutes earlier a Tift
County player was warned
about her rough play.
But Tift had just one more
significant shot on goal the
Sports
walked and didn’t end
until he popped out to
the catcher.
Scott Willis singled
behind Poole and
Blake Lee doubled.
The courtesy runner
for Willis was picked
off, but that in turn
enabled Poole to score
the first run of the contest.
Jordan Beatty, from the fifth spot,
dering kicks, and it all paid
off nearly halfway through
the half.
The Blue Devils had other
corner opportunities in the
second half, the first coming
almost five minutes into the
action. This kick resulted
in a headshot that Kyler
Richmond kicked away from
the goal.
Warner Robins followed
with a drive from the back
line by Brian Hitch, but
his shot was too long. Tift
County regained control
with some authoritative
footwork, forcing a save by
Demon goalkeeper Charles
Loudin and seeing another
rest of the match, and home
keeper Kristen Graham
saved it.
For the first half of the
contest, Warner Robins
defender Becky Atkins had

bases were loaded when he came to
the plate, however, so he also picked
up an RBI as Lee came home.
Britt Sutton bunted to follow. He
ended up going all the way to sec

and that in turn enabled Watson
and Beatty to score runs three and
four. Sutton, who had taken second
on the miscue, moved to third on a
passed ball and scored when Alec

shot hit the side post.
The visiting goalkeeper
had to make some saves
as well with it still 0-0, one
by Josh Brooks off a good
pass by Trevor Whelan and
a blast from David Clark
from near midfield. Clark,
Warner Robins’ record-set
ting kicker in football and
still a sophomore, had two
more shots saved, one after
a stolen Tift throw-in by
Hitch.

About seven minutes
later, the Devils nearly
scored again on a corner,
again the shot taken off a
player’s head.
Despite some hard-charg
ing efforts by Brooks and
Clark, Warner Robins didn’t
have many scoring opportu
nities over the last 15 min
utes of play. The Demons
also drew two yellow cards
in the second half.
Warner Robins was the
offensive aggressor in the
first half. The best scor

Northside, on the other hand, put
two runners on in the first, one in
the second and one in the third,
although none of them came via a

In fact, Logan Simmons, who

Warner Robins never did give up a
hit. He did give up four walks and
hit two batters, however.
