McCown to return for
book signing
Author T.L. McCown. who grew
up in Perry, will return Saturday
for a book signing at Two Friends,
located at 909 Carroll Street.
The author, will be on hand
from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. signing
copies of her new book Creating
Shamsiyah: Staging the Saudi
Feminist Movement, which is
a sequel to her earlier book,
Shifting Sands: Life in Arabia
with a Saudi Princess.
Perry police assist in
suspect arrests
Four suspects in Byron auto
parts store thefts were arrest
ed Thursday afternoon in Perry
by the Peach County Sheriff's
Office.
A Perry police officer assisted
a Peach County deputy in secur
ing the four suspects reportedly
driving a white Ford Taurus, said
Perry Police Capt Bill Phelps.
The suspects reportedly had
refused to stop for a Peach
County deputy before being
stopped in Perry on U.S. 341 west
of Interstate 75, near Angelina's.
Byron Police investigators are
handling the investigation.

Perry High to present
‘hilarious’ comedy
Perry High Theatre has begun
the production Check Please,
described as a "hilarious comedy
about finding true love.” It started
running Thursday and will run
again today and Saturday.
Tickets are $5 and the show
begins at 5 p.m.

A S2OO million industry
will be built near Perry, and
will bring nearly 100 full
time jobs with average sala
ries of more than $40,000
before benefits.
The industry, already
named Houston American
Cement Company, is a
subsidiary of Votorantim
Cimento North America,
which is a Brazilian com
pany.

Local Rotarian helps fight war on polio

Bob Griggers, a mem
ber of the Rotary Club of
Centerville, and his wife,
Brenda, were in a group of
20 Rotarians and spouses
recently participating in a
Rotary International nation
al Immunization Day in
Uttar Pradesh, India.
The group met in Delhi,
and toured Delhi, Agra
(home of the Taj Mahal),
and Jaipur before starting
their participation in the
immunization project, where
they worked in local booths
in different cities for three
days, participating hands-on
in giving the children the
vaccine.
They met with offi
cials from the Indian
Government, UNICEF and
the World Health organiza
tion and were part of an
effort that saw 38 million

It will be built in the
Clinchfield area outside of
Perry, and will include a
limestone mine and cement
processing plant. A railroad
spur will be constructed for
hauling 40 percent of the
cement by rail, and trucks
will also be used for hauling

jubilant in making the
announcement of the new
industry, which will have
a big impact on the local
economy even before it is
up and running by the tar
get opening date of 2010.
Company officials antici
pate that building the plant
will require up to 500 con
struction workers, and the
industry will bring a big
boost to the county’s tax
digest.

Hospital
burglar
pursued

Perry and Warner Robins
police are asking for assis
tance in identifying a local
hospital burglary suspect.
The suspect hit the Perry
Hospital, Houston Medical
Center and the Macon
Medical Center all in the
same day, March 10, accord
ing to Det. Sgt. Chris Sutcliff
of the Perry Police. “He knew
where he was going, he went
to all the rooms where there
were safes.”
Sutcliff said the sus
pect walked around Perry
Hospital, pried open an
office door, pried the door
off the small safe bolted to
the counter and stole $378
in cash. Sutcliff said the
suspect went into areas of
the Perry Hospital usually
closed off on the weekends
and surveillence camera
shows him in that area for
about 11 minutes.
He said the suspect was
able to get into the area
because the doors, which
are locked on the weekends,
were opened by the cleaning
crews to wax the floors.

County asks DOT
for traffic light

Houston County is asking
for a traffic light at Booth
Road and Ga. 247.
“It’s almost sui
cide coming out of the
Museum of Aviation,”
said Commissioner Larry
Thomson, noting the need
for a signal.
The intersection has been
the site of several serious
accidents and fatal wrecks.
Museum of Aviation offi
cials have been asking for
the light for some time and
county officials have pointed
out the need at meetings
with state DOT officials held
at the museum.
“It’s not a done deal,”
Thomson said, “but it is
closer to fruition.”
He thanked the members
of the local legislative del
egation for their efforts. He
also thanked DOT district
commissioner Larry Walker
and the DOT staff.
