Caring
for your
clocks
We get a lot of ques
tions about clock
care at Carrie
Lynn’s. I recommend that
you have your clocks oiled
and checked every one to
two years and that you con
sult with clock repair profes
sionals about any questions
you may have about antique
clocks and time pieces. Mr.
Bayles in
Ft. Valley
is a very
good refer

Middle Georgia. Ask your
friends and neighbors where
they take their clocks and get
good references before giving
your antique time piece to
someone you aren’t familiar
with. Here are sdme gen
eral details for takiiig care of
antique clocks:
Clock Cases: Kteep your
clocks dusted. You may want
to lightly buff the original
Finish for shine. Add very
little wax if you feel that the
case REALLY needs it. Use
a good paste wax or tinted
wax. Stay away from sili
cone based waxes that will
cause build up. Glean the
glass faces with a little glass
cleaner sprayed oh a soft
cloth. Don’t spray it directly
on the clock because it can
get into places it shouldn’t
be! Do not try to clean
painted glass or surfaces.
You could destroy the fragile
paint along with the value of
your clock!
I know that there are
places that a clock needs to
be oiled but I would leave
that to the professionals
unless they show you exact
ly what kind of oil to use
and where to put it. When
clocks begin to run slow, it
is usually because they need
oiled. Remember to keep
your clocks level. An unlevel
clock can sometimes not run
properly and leveling as it
hangs or sits will improve its
function. There is also an
adjustment you can make on
a clock pendulum that will
make the clock ran faster
or slower. With all the sonic
booms we have arotind here,
it is easy to have your clocks
knocked off level.
Be careful not to over
wind your clock. You can
break the springs and this
can be an expensive repair.
Most key wind clocks have
little directional arrows to
show you which way to wind.
When you are resetting the
time on your clock because
it has run down, either wait
until it is the right time and
restart it or push the hands
in clockwise direction, stop
ping at each place it chimes
and let it go through the
chiming cycle. Never push
the hands backward, this
will mess your clock up real
fast. Some electrical vintage
clocks are self adjusting and
their chimes will Eventually
adjust to the right number.
There are thousands of
types of antique and vintage
clocks available tdday, each
one precious and interesting.
From tall case clocks, to cuck
oos, to mantle clocks, there
is something for everyone.
To learn more about antique
clocks and their care and
restoration, check out your
local library or bookstore.
The Smithsonian Institute
also has an extensive list
of books about clocks and
their care'on their Website as
well. Happy Collecting and
don’t forget about the Heart
of Georgia Develomental
Disabilities auction Friday
and Saturday!
