Wind shift sents flames toward park bridges, boardwalk FOLKSTON (MNS) - After more than a month of wildfires repeatedly threatening the Okefenokee Swamp Park, flames have finally damaged part of the popular tourist attraction. Park manager Martin Bell said 1,400 feet of a boardwalk and two bridges leading from the park into the swamp were burned Wednesday night. The wooden base of a metal observation tower was also damaged by flames, he said. “We went to some extreme efforts to save it,” Bell said of the boardwalk and bridges. “There’s nothing to salvage. It’s been a blow today.” The fire was likely caused when winds shifted direc tions and reburned areas near the boardwalk, includ ing some unburned under growth near the damaged structures that had been constantly watered to pre vent them from burning. Firefighters will be posted at the swamp park to protect undamaged structures as well as wildlife until the fire threat has ended, Bell said. He said the park remains open to visitors but the only access they will have to the swamp will be by train because water levels are too low to offer boat tours. “We’re going to survive,” he said. “We’ll look at rebuilding once we get some water out here.” The wind shift also blew heavy smoke into areas east of the fires, prompting the Coastal Georgia Health' District to issue an advisory for residents. According to the advisory, Grrrreat Deals Dc ycu have scmething Dre sses tc sell and it’s under w -rr SSC? The smoke could also cre ate problems for people with heart or lung disease, aller gies, asthma and “chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,” according to the advisory. The health district recommended even healthy people limit exposure to smoke, stay indoors with doors and windows closed, and to run an air condition er with the fresh air intake closed. Anyone experiencing problems from the smoke is advised to contact a physi cian. The change in wind direction did more than blow smoke to the east. The Big Turnaround Fire grew more than 20,000 acres Wednesday and the Bugaboo Scrub Fire also grew more than 4,000 acres. The burned acreage was all contained within the boundaries of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.
