Fort Valley suspends
Picnics in the Park
The Promotions Committee
of Fort Valley Main Street/DDA
announced this past week it had
voted to suspend the Picnics in the
Park for the hot summer months.
The picnics, according to a release,
will resume Sept. 27, with music
provided by local legend Bruce
Brookshire. They will continue Oct. 1
25 and Nov. 15, the release reads.
American Red Cross
looking for ‘heroes’
The Houston-Middle Georgia
Chapter ot the American Red Cross
is currently taking applications for
"Hero of Middle Georgia."
Hero per their release - but not
full limited to this description - is:
"A person who risks his or her life
to save another; a person of admi
rable courage; anyone regarded as
an ideal or model. To thatend, they
are asking people to nominate the
person who comes to mind when
you think of the word “hero.”
The nomination deadline is July
2. Aug. 16, according to the release,
the Heroes of Middle Georgia
Coordinating Committee will honor
six local heroes from Robins Air
Force Base, Bleckley, Houston,
Pulaski or Wilcox Counties. Visit

They took their turns in the com
petitions at Reaves Arena, gathering
with hundreds of other young riders
from across Georgia to compete for
awards in barrel racing, pole bending
and other western-style horse events,
and then returned to the stables.
They had decorated their stable
area with a Tiki-Tiki theme, and
had a bulletin board with the theme
“Horsin’ around in Paradise.”
It was hot, hard work, with flies
to swat, stables to keep clean and
horses in need of water, hay and
exercise, but according to Kellie Day,
who is the volunteer leader of the
group, the group wound up feeling
good when the show was over.
“We had numerous awards and
placings given to our kids in all of
the divisions,” Day said, adding that
Kori Patterson, a club member from
Peach County, was awarded Reserve
Champion for the Contest Division.
The Middle Georgia 4-H Horse
Club is open to all young people
between the ages of nine and 18. The
members are from public and pri
vate schools, or are home-schooled,
and not affiliated with any specific
school.
“You don’t have to have a horse
to join,” Day said. “The club sup
ports several academic teams. This

Woman arrested, charged

Shirley Mae Pach, 60,
was arrested Tuesday for
stealing the identity of a
North Carolina woman.
Pach was arrested in the
parking lot at the Perry
Kroger, after Officer Steve
Cox became suspicious of
the woman he was citing
for parking in a handi
capped parking spot.

$47,520,363 budget for fis
cal year 2008.
The budget is up $4.2
million from the FY2007
amended budget of
$45,616,174.
