a team from the town of
Harlem in Columbia County
near Augusta. Knowles said
this was the club he had
heard would be the one to
beat in order to win it all.
“We were able to stay in
the winner’s bracket,” said
Knowles about the team’s
wins against Monroe County
and Columbia. “The first
game we played (Columbia)
was a pitching due, only one
hit allowed per team. We won
it.
“In the second game, their
pitching kind of fatigued
toward the end. We were able
to get on with a couple of hits
and we won the champion
ship 3-0. It was a good ball
game.”
Under Dixie rules, a pitcher
in softball can only work 13
innings in one tournament.
Knowles said it doesn’t take
long to use those innings up
if a team has to play six
times. Plus, there is a consec
utive game rule that states
a pitcher who throws three
or more innings in one game
cannot pitch in her team’s
next game.
“That’s the reason we have
to have depth in pitching,”
said Knowles. “So far we’ve
had it. It’s carried us. We
