Warner Robins burned down the hopes of
Camden County and Norcross before falling
to Peachtree Ridge (eventual co-state cham
pions) in the semifinals in Atlanta.
“It’s a long year,” said head coach Bryan
Way, who will begin his fourth season as De
mons head coach. “Our region is very com
petitive. Of course everybody wants to win
every game they play, but you better be real
good to do that. Playing the teams we’re go
ing to be playing not only in the region, but in
the non-region, is very difficult.
“You have to stay the course. It’s a mara
thon. You have to keep your kids positive
and keep working to improve. If you get in
the playoffs anything can happen. Playing in
a competitive league makes you realize how
you have to hang in there and not get discour
aged.”
Way and his staff had to say goodbye to 38
seniors, perhaps the most in school history
The coach often finds himself talking about
losing great seniors at one position one year,
and then the following year he’s talking about
losing great seniors at that same spot.
“We lost a lot of good football players with
a lot of experience,” said Way. “We had two
starters on defense who played in every game
for three years, plus a lot who had started two
years. We lost a center who was a three-year
starter.
“Year-in and yearout we are going to be a
seniordominated team. Naturally there are

some concerns that you have every year. The
kids who are coming back who are seniors
now realize it’s their team and their turn to
step up.”
Way is also taking his time in making
evaluations on how good Warner Robins is
as compared to other years, such as his first
season that resulted in the Class AAAA state
championship (2004).
“We have some strong points on the team
and some spots we have to improve a lot,” he
said. “We have to make sure we keep work
ing and get better in those areas we’re not as
experienced at, which are basically our skill
positions on both sides of the ball.
“Our defensive front, especially the defen
sive line, we have three returning starters there
out of four spots. We have a linebacker who
started for us last year, so four out of the front
seven are back. The others had some playing
time last year, so they've been in the fire. And
though we only have one offensive line starter
back, there were three other guys who played
a good bit and started a few games.
“So the experience we have is on the line
of scrimmage. Not to say we don’t need to
improve there, but they have more game ex
perience than the guys behind them.”
The top spot behind the offensive line is
quarterback, and Warner Robins goes from
Mark Wright Jr., the leader of the 2004 state
champions, to a two-man battle involving the
quarterback who filled in for Wright in 2005
after Wright’s serious knee injury
Shane Sams, as a sophomore himself
