Tips on growing pears in Georgia
Pear season is here and
it is this time of year when
pear growers begin thinking
about what they should have
done for their pear trees dur
ing to ensure a successful
pear crop. It’s too late now,
of course, but there’s always
next year.
Pears are grown all over
Georgia, but on a relatively
small scale. Due to the prev
alence of fire blight, a major
disease of pears, in the humid
eastern and southern states,
most of the pear production
is centered in the drier areas
of the Pacific Northwest.
Three important types
of pears are grown here
in Georgia-the Asian pear
(Pyrus pyrifolia), the
Oriental pear (E serotina),
and the European pear (E
communis).

quality pear trees like the
famous Bartlett, a European
type, often bear 15 years
even in the most humid
parts of the country, if these
steps are observed:
1. Avoid overfertilizing
the tree. Nitrogen causes
fast, succulent growth, the
kind most vulnerable to fire
blight. In the back yard, a

all the fertilizer a pear tree
needs, given reasonably good
soil. If not, compost will pro
vide sufficient nitrogen. If
extra phosphorus and potas
sium are required, use slow
release sources like bone
meal for phosphorus and
wood ashes for potassium.
2. Prune out blight
infected wood as quickly
as possible. Fire blight is
easy to recognize. The ends
of branches look as if they
have been burned, and the
tips curl over. “Watch for
late blooms,” say Lois and
Bill Davie, who grow 170 dif
ferent varieties of pears in
their experimental orchard
in Pennsylvania. “These late
blooms, or false blooms as
they are called, are often the
source of a summer blight
infection. Prune them off.”

3. There’s no such
thing as a tree-ripened
pear-the fruit invariably
fall before ripening. So to
prevent bruising, pick pears
when they are ripe but still
hard, before they separate
easily from the branch but
after the time when picking
can only be done by tearing
the branch or stem. Store
the pears in a cool place
where they will finish ripen
ing to juicy, buttery sweet
ness.
4. Sunlight is the key to
maximum fruit produc
tion. Plant pears in an area
receiving full sunlight. The
early morning sunlight is
especially important because
it dries the dew from the
leaves, thus reducing the
potential for diseases.
Next: More on pears.
