Lady Bears beat lift County
Inside: WR goes 4-1 in Evans tourney; Perry 2-3 in Watermelon invite
By MATTHEW BROWN

Through the first three
innings Monday, it looked
like Houston County High
and Tift
County High
were going
to play an
old-fashioned
slo w-pitch
style softball
game with a
final score of
something
like 18-15.

But it was still a fast-pitch
game, and the Bears’ 6-4
lead after the third inning
held to the end. Brianna
Hancock earned another
pitching win despite the fact
that Tift County had either
the tying or go-ahead run at
the plate in each of the final
four frames.
“After we scored those six
runs, our bats cooled down
a little,” said Houston head
coach Angela Crawford. “But
the defense really stepped it
up for us, made some plays
when they had runners in
scoring position to allow us
to keep the lead and eventu
ally win the game.”
Ashlee Burkett, coming off
a shoulder operation after
the 2006 season, returned to
her normal catching position
and took Hancock’s pitches
until the Seventh inning.
The surgery didn't kdep her
from hitting, and her bat
was the most productive of
all the Bears with four hits
and four runs batted in. One
of her hits was a first-inning
two-run home run.
“She’s still trying to get
into the swing of things back
there,” said Crawford about
Burkett’s catching and the
fact that she was favoring
that arm late in the game.
“She’s doing a great job,
and hopefully she’s back

Rodney Culverhouse wants the
Westfield softball Hornets to approach
every game like a region game. He said
he tells the girls if they take the field
and play ball, they should be able to
handle any situation in defending the
2006 GISA state championship.
Westfield took care of things in two
non-region games recently, includ
ing Monday’s road win at Central
Fellowship in Macon. The Hornets won
in three innings 15-0 to improve to 6-6
on the season.

IN BRIEF
WR Rec to host Punt, Pass and Kick
The Warner Robins Recreation Department will be
out in a row Saturday as Westfield
topped George Walton Academy 5-0 in
Monroe.
According to Culverhouse, the
Hornet staff was keeping a close watch
on Gilliam, who didn’t pitch for most of
August. But he said his pitcher never
faced more than five batters in any
inning against a George Walton team
that has beaten First Presbyterian
Day in Macon and Tattnall Square
and John Milledge at home. Gilliam
allowed just five hits with five walks
and no strikeouts over seven innings.

How’d that feel?
”It felt great.”
No surprise there in
hearing Houston County
head football coach George
Collins’ reaction to his first

“They played well,”
Collins added, in shift

Especially the defense.

time to get things rolling.”
