PLAYHOUSE
From page iA
10-foot by 16-foot Victorian
play house last Christmas.
The playhouse was placed
in the front yard, and the
Trotters intended to paint
it to match their home, but
as it turned out, they had
to have it removed from
their property because it
was found to be in vio
lation of city ordinances
and the requirements of
the Washington-Evergreen
Historic District.
Since that time, they have
worked with City Planner
Mike Beecham, as well as
with the playhouse builder,
to find a way to put it in
their back yard and still con
form to city requirements.
This required the four vari
ances, all having to do with
the exact placement of the
playhouse on a narrow back
lot which also includes a
swimming pool, a small
storage building and a large
tree.

After some expressions
of concern over the traffic
impact, the commissioners
voted to recommend denial
of the request. Several of
them had visited the site
personally to look at the
traffic situation.
Chairman Martin
Beeland characterized the
traffic impact as “an acci
dent waiting to happen,”
and Commissioner Willie
King said it was simply the
“wrong location.”
The house Rodriguez has
been hoping to buy and use
for the center has a large
fenced-in back yard, and the
potential for a paved area
that would allow cars to
turn around before exiting,
but it is also situated on a
curve in a school zone where
traffic frequently backs up.
Rodriguez’ request will
now go before City Council.
