to Brentwood. Homecoming enters the
picture, simply due to the fact it also
brings distractions via the long list of
activities leading up to the 8 p.m. kickoff
Friday at Arrington Stadium.
“We’ve just got to stay focused,” Jones
resolved.
And doing that means preparing for
Brentwood, a team that tied the Hornets
7-all last year at their place.
The stalemate was no doubt aided by
the fact their head coach, Bert Brown,
was one of Jones’ assistants in the past.
To that end, the War Eagles employ
the Wing-T on offense like the Hornets,
as well as prefer a 50 front - typically 5-
3, Jones said, as they have three “really
good” linebackers.
On average, Brentwood, a AA team,
comes in netting approximately 166 yards
rushing a game and about 22 passing.
Their “go-to” guy, Jones said, was Dalton
Harris, who averages 6.42 yards a carry,
but they do have two more that average
more than six.
On defense, they give up around 96
yards on the ground and a meager 7 in
the air.
Scouting them more than that, how-

that made it a one-point
game. A mistake on the
conversion try cost the
Panthers a chance at the
win.
“The biggest thing was
me making a very poor deci
sion at the end of the game
to go for two,” said Scott.
“Hindsight being 20/20, I
feel that loss was on me.
Once we jumped offsides
on the first play, we should
have put the PAT team in
there (and try for overtime).
I feel like it was a game we
should have won.
“But at the same time
you grow from it, and hope
fully we won’t allow that to
happen this year.”
Jackson is another one
of those high school pro
grams using the spread-out
offense, and Scott said they
look like the same team
even though some individu
als are different. He said
their new starting quarter
back throws the ball well to
big receivers.
“I feel like the running
back’s better,” said Scott.
“He’s more explosive, which
is very scary.”
And even though it’s the
kind of offense coaches
nowadays should be used
to seeing over and over,
Scott said it’s still difficult
to make a defensive scheme

Parkview the Bears, who
lost 20-7 to now-3-0 Berkmar
this past weekend, beat last
year 20-10. That Parkview
finished the year 5-6 and
were eliminated in the state
playoffs in the first round.
That Parkview didn’t
have the half dozen running
backs, Collins said, that this
one does.
“I don’t know, maybe they
were young kids who didn’t
play,” he said of a squad
that rolled up more than 200
yards of offense in the first
quarter alone in a 44-8 win
over Union Grove this past
weekend. All six runners
scored in that contest, the
Panthers’ second win of they
young season coupled with
no losses. “But now once
they get behind one of those
big old linebackers, they’re
scary. Offensive speed-wise,
I think they’re as fast if not
faster than Northside.”
Scary is also the word he
used for a defense that bases
out of a 4-3 - the offense
runs some form of a Wing.
That defense gave up only
two first downs to Union
Grove, at least until late in
the final quarter.
“They take care of respon
sibility,” Collins said.
“They’re very disciplined ...
do what they’re supposed
to do. They’re going to play
hard.
“It’s what kind of what
you expect from Parkview.”
As far as the Bears, yes,
they’re having trouble scor
ing - at least until late. But,
Collins added, they’re still
playing “extremely hard as
a group,” he said. “They’re
willing and they’re work
ing,” he said. “Good things
are going to happen (to
ever, has been just about as challenging
for Jones as getting his mind around the
Homecoming phenomena. That’s because,
just like in preparing for the Trojans this
past week, he’s been a little short on game
film. Like Tattnall, the War Eagles’ game
this past weekend against John Milledge
- a team Westfield opened the year by
beating - was rained out.
“I have about a half,” Jones said. “But
it was pouring so hard during one quarter,
you can’t see anything.”
Brentwood, he added, did score in that
contest but it was called back leaving it to
end 0-0.
“We’ll just have to work on getting our
front people (on defense) to the outside to
try and slow down the sweep stuff ... the
‘jet’ and ‘rocket’ type stuff as we call it...
get our people to stay home.
“(But) if we get to flowing too quick, it
can hurt you on the back side.”
When the Hornets have the ball, Jones
said he expected Brentwood to stack the
line as much as possible.
“They know what we do,” he said. “I
expect they’ll try to take advantage of
that if they can.”
Just as long as they don’t ruin
Homecoming. He may not be a fan of it
but losing is also something he wishes
doesn’t come again - if it just has to come
at all - until basketball season.
"Nobody's really stopped us yet. We've
just stopped ourselves in execution.
The maturity level of our offense Is the
strength of our football team."

against it.
“It’s actually harder to
defend,” said Scott. “A lot
of people talk about basket
ball on grass. That’s how
we’ve evolved on offense.
You try to get your best ath
letes in space, move them
around, and it seems like
more and more high schools
and colleges are going to
this spread offense.
“Everybody has their
own little wrinkles. We
run it a lot different than
what we are going to see
out of (Jackson). It doesn’t
become easier ... trying to
defend it. That’s why you
see so many teams scor
ing so many points. The
more space you get, you are
going to win those one-on
one match-ups.”
From Perry’s offensive
perspective, the new spread
set run by senior quarter
back Casey Hayward is
averaging more than 30
points a game. The Panther
defense can even take some
credit setting up the offense
with short field position,
and Hayward, as a corner-
them).”
“We just can’t do the things
to hurt ourselves. We can’t
make mistakes. We can’t
give them (the Panthers)
field position or points.
“We can’t make the men
tal mistakes or have penal
ties. Those are the kinds

As for Perry’s bye week
again coming in mid-
September instead of
October or even November,
Scott said it turned out
well this time. They were
able to address some con

to Dougherty in Albany in
Week 2, yet another situ

probably should have come
out on top.
“We didn’tplay well defen

gave Lowndes the 5-3 final.
The only Bear hits afterwards
were a single by Ling in the fifth
and a double from Vasquez in the
sixth. The loss put Houston at 6-2
in the region.
WARNER ROBINS 10, LOWNDES 0
Lowndes did not leave town with
its perfect region record intact,
however, as Warner Robins High
won a 10-0 decision later that day
(in a game that was postponed due
to inclement weather on Friday).
The Demonettes scored five runs
in the first, two in the third, one in
the fourth and two in the fifth to
end the game at five.
Kristen Graham on the mound
did a good job of getting out of
trouble with runners in scoring
position, said Warner Robins head
coach Brenda Arnett. Graham
struck out 12 hitters in all.
Leading the Demonettes at the
plate were: Katie Farinelli, who
went 3-4 with a triple, Jensen
Barrett, who went 2-4, Kylie
Barrett, who had a double and
Maci Brown, who was 2-2.
