Old fashioned skills still count at the fair
Georgia Living Show
takes weeks to install

When the Georgia National
Fair opens two weeks from
tomorrow, there’ll be some
who can’t wait for the big
name concerts, some who
head straight for the mid
way, and some who go look
ing for a funnel cake.
But there’ll be others who
head straight for the quiet
side of the fair.
That’s the crowd you’ll
find every day in the Miller-
Murphy-Howard Building
and Heritage Hall, wan
dering through the exhib
its, admiring the quilts, the
crafts and the cooking, the
roses, the paintings and the
photographs.
The Georgia Living Show
ties the fair to a long tradi
tion that gives homemak
ers and artisans a chance
to show their talents and
maybe go home with a blue
ribbon.
Well, maybe a red ribbon,
or maybe a white ribbon, or
maybe even no ribbon at all,
but still there’s something
to be said for having your
needlework or your pho
tography lovingly displayed
with all the rest.
The show, under the direc
tion of Lora Arledge and her
assistant Sandy Kusuda,

also already been judged.
The quilts - which hang
straight down from the
metal ceiling beams or along
the walls - sire put up early.
Other items, such as
paintings and photographs
are also mounted as exhib

the perishable items, such
as decorated cakes, plants
and flowers such as dahlias,
roses and camellias come in
last.
Once the fair opens, a
series of special events will
be on the schedule.
Visitors can watch deco
rative painting demonstra
tions, learn how to weave
corn shucks and carve
pumpkins, speak with art
ists-in-residence, and take a
break to sit down and watch
cooking shows as well as
cooking contests.
The Georgia National Fair
