RNina Garcia is best known
for her candid commentary
on the catwalks of Project
Runway, but she takes a
gentler approach in her new
book. The Little Black Book
of Style, out this month. 'lt's
like Style 101' Garcia, the
fashion director at Elle maga
zine, tells us.'A lot of people
come up to me with fashion
questions, and I feel like I
have all these recipes in my
head. I wanted to answer all
the questions." So she boiled
all her recipes down to 10
basic rules for fashionable women, and she added tips
from big names such as Ralph Lauren and Diane Von Fur
stenberg. Among the basics: "how to edit' and “the ut
most importance of shoes.' She also warns against be
coming a fashion victim by succumbing to trends and
carrying the "it" bag.

Qj What happened to Adrien
Brody? I have adored him
since The Pianist. That old Oscar
curse must be true.
Carrie Anderson, Aquebogue, X.Y.
Don’t write him off yet, Carrie.
Brody, 34, who won his Oscar
for The Pianist has several
films coming with hot co-stars.
Watch for Manolete with Penel

Hiding behind a beard in King of California,
Michael Douglas (who turns 63 Tuesday) looks
Hk more like dad Kirk, 90. His wife, actress Catherine
Zeta-Jones (who turns 38 also on Tuesday) didn't
H like the look. He says that, on the last day of film
jf*H| <n<J. she told him: ‘Shave it off. I feel like I've been
Wf living with the Unabomber." Since marrying her in
yy 2000, he has changed his priorities. "I never antici
ijSß pated raising a second family at my age," says
■addition to Dylan, 7, and
is a son, Cameron, 28, from
t marriage. "The nice thing
ut getting older is that you
■predate and protect your
fe, not take it for granted.’
He says that he was focused
on his career when raising
Cameron. 'ln our industry,
there's no balancing act or
it's very rare. One is either
consumed, one way or the
, „ other, and the kids suffer.
Pf particularly when you've
got both parents working.
It's tough for kids in terms
of quality time."

Linda Ronstadtisat
home in San Francisco
talking with me about
how she is raising her
teen children in today's
pop-culture-driven world I
(no junk food, no TV), the
importance of paying RBi
attention and learning
to do things carefully
("when you do, it changes :
everything") and passing
down traditions like the
mariachi music of her father's homeland, Mexico.
She is 61 now and as easy to talk to as a longtime
girlfriend. Ronstadt's music has reflected all the
influences and passions of her life, among them
children (with lullabies) and Mexico (with folk
songs). This week she'll reconnect with the latter
at the International Mariachi Festival in San Jose,
Calif., headlining Saturday night with Los Lobos.
She's equally interested in the mariachi workshops
going on this week because it's a passing on of
the culture, she says, and that must be done
“person to person, hand to hand, mono a mano."

Q. is Patrick Wilson, from the film
1 Evening, the same actor who was
in Broadway's The Full Monty and who
played Raoul in the movie version of
The Phantom of the Opera ? If he is, tell
me more about him.
Mary Stott, Port Charlotte. Fla.
It is indeed the same actor. A gradu
ate of Carnegie Mellon University
and a Virginia native, Wilson earned
Tbny nominations for The Full Monty
and Oklahoma! But he was nomi
nated for an Emmy and a Golden
Globe for his most impressive work,
HBO’s Angels in America. Wilson,
34, plays the guitar and loves arena
rock bands like Van Halen. He’s mar
ried to actress Dagmara Dominczyk,
whom he met in college, and they have
a 1-year-old son.
Q. What is Howie Mandel's background, and how did he get
* the job hosting NBC's Deal or No Deal?
Robert Mathys, Clarkxville. Teint.
Mandel has been an actor and stand-up comedian, but
when he first got the offer for Deal, he turned it down. “It
just wasn’t what I wanted to do in my
career. I thought I would be a laughing
stock.” NBC’s persistence flattered him,
so he agreed to meet at a deli, but he
was looking around $
for Ashton Kutcher of *
Funk'd. NBC reps had
a cardboard cutout of
the Din/ hoard, and "I
tonight I was living punkcd."
