Is your salvation actually

appointment with a repu

The cardiologist com
pletely overlooked a massive
occlusion inside my LAD and
dismissed me to resume nor
mal activities. I continued to
experience problems, almost
blacking out while running
up a hill, so I immediately
got an appointment with Dr.
F. S. Wanna in Macon, one of
the premier heart surgeons
in the south. He requested
for re-evaluation of the pho

On Aug. 26 after Beverly

church and eaten lunch,
Wanna called. He said, “Mr.
Powell, you have a life-threat
ening heart problem” and
urged me to be in his office
early the next morning. He
showed me on his computer
screen the ominous block
age that went undetected
four months earlier by the
cardiologist, and advised me
I needed surgery.
To avoid heart surgery, I
implored him to let me have
another heart catheteriza
tion to determine if a stent
could be placed inside the
LAD. He didn’t think the
artery was stentable since
the occlusion was locat
ed near the branch of the
left main artery; however,
another cardiologist, Dr.
Charles Brown, agreed to see
me and performed a heart
catheterization at Atlanta’s
Piedmont Hospital.
If the LAD could not be
stented, my intention was
to return to Macon and have
Wanna perform the bypass
surgery.
As it turned out, Brown
confirmed Wanna’s diagno
sis. He insisted it would be a
mistake to return to Macon
- that I must have heart sur
gery right away. He referred
me to Dr. W. Morris Brown,
one of Piedmont Hospital’s
top heart surgeons, who per

happened to be Beverly’s

I praise God for watching
over me while my life was in
danger and for continuing to
do so today. I have forgiven
the "unnamed cardiologist
for his misdiagnosis, wish
him no ill will, and will not
reveal his identity if asked.
Just as physicians are
guilty of rendering faulty
diagnoses due to oversights
and misjudgments, many
people claim to be saved
based on misconceptions.
Many think that joining a
church and being baptized
guarantees salvation. Others
mistakenly depend on good
works, sacraments of wor
ship, and philanthropic
deeds to get to heaven.
We must recognize that we
will enter heaven with the
same mindset we possess on
earth. If we possessed a dif
ferent mindset in the here
after, we wouldn’t know who
we had been in the former
life.
To attend church on
Sunday, smile and glad-hand
everyone in sight, but revert
to devilish behavior and
mistreatment of others from
Monday through Saturday
makes one unfit to enter
heaven’s portals.
Salvation without spiri
tual commitment is dead,
and those who refuse , to

earth may not be allowed
the opportunity to do so in
heaven.

God does not give up on me,
I know I am not a hopeless

each of His children.
Not good enough? That all

When in doubt about self
worth, open your Bible to
Genesis. Begin reading with
verse one. As we read about
creation, we find that “God
saw eveiything He made and
it was good.” That includes
you and me. All we have to
do is allow God to bring out
the best!
