More cole crop pointers
Last week’s article featured some of the
basics of the many kinds of vegetables in the
cabbage family, better known as cole crops.
These included cabbage, kale, collards, cauli
flower, broccoli, and brussels sprouts.
We discovered that, as a
group, these crops tend to be
high in vitamins and low in
calories-a dieter’s dream.
We also learned the impor
tance of growing cabbages
and related crops in nitro
gen-rich soil from the very
beginning as to encourage
fast-growing, healthy crops.
This week I would like to
offer some additional cole
crop pointers.

While each cole crop has its own particular
brand of problems, most pests and diseases
are shared by the whole group. I suppose the
most persistent problem you will encounter is
the barrage of caterpillars known as cabbage
loopers.
These pesky invaders love to try to get a taste
of the young, tender foliage well before you do.
Luckily, there are some very effective measures
that can eliminate the caterpillar problem.
If you are so inclined, you can handpick
them.
Or, you can get the Trichogramma wasp to
do the work for you. These wasps are parasites

History Quiz
In 1901 and 1902, most American
which lay their eggs on the caterpillar, and
upon hatching, the wasp larvae kill the cater
pillar by feeding on it until it dies.
You can procure these wasps through mail
order gardening magazines.
Perhaps the surest way to control the cab
bage looper is by a preparation made from
the naturally occurring bacterium, Bacillus
thuringiensis, also known as BT. Sprayed on
the foliage and ingested by the caterpillars,
it turns them into mushy dark brown blobs
in a matter of days. BT is sold under several
names, including Biotrol, Dipel, and Thuricide.
Carbaryl (Sevin) is also effective against cab
bage loopers and other worms.
Another problem of cole crops is clubroot.
This is a fungal disease that attacks roots of
all cole crops, rendering them unable to take
up water and nutrients. It deforms the roots so
that they appear enlarged and club-shaped.
The best controls are to keep the pH of your
soil above 6.5 and to refrain from planting any
cole crops in the affected area for at least two
years.
Still another cole crop basic involves trans
planting the young plants. When it comes time
to transplant the seedlings don’t be alarmed if
their long, thin taproots are slightly damaged.
While most tap-rooted plants are set back
considerably if the root is injured during trans
planting, this is not true of cole crops because

We’ve had lots of things to
get stuck at our house, though.
For instance, mini marshmal
lows get stuck in little boys’
ears when they poke them in
there. Since the body temper
ature of humans is 98.6, the
marshmallows begin to melt
rather quickly and ooze down
into the ear canal.
Let me tell you, those little
suckers are hard to dig out.
Something else that also gets
stuck is Duplo Blocks. They
get stuck when flushed down
the toilet. You can’t see them,
but you know they’re down
there because nothing else
can go down, and let me tell
you, that sure makes a mess.
The toilet has to be removed
from the floor in order to get
the blocks out.
